Help me pick a rifle...

So I'm looking for an "All Purpose" centre fire rifle.

I am buying something off the shelf that is instock somewhere at a local sporting goods store as I need this unit pretty quick for my "coyote problem" which I would like to address before my cows start to calve in about a month.

I would also like this gun to possibly take the odd deer but I have never shot a deer in my life, this will not be a high use gun.

I'm thinking .270 caliber will be a good choice for me in my open prairie environment and should provide adequate range and knock down power for coyotes and deer.

I went to one of the bigger retailers last night and wanted to look at a few models.

Winchester Model 70, Remmington 700 BDL, Weatherby Vanguard.

I decided against the Remington after reading into "accidental discharge issues" with the Remingotn action and trigger. in fact one of the salesman said that an employee of the store had returned a next to new 700 after it went off with the safety on.

I fell in love with a Weatherby Vanguard in .270 with the Walnut stock and stainless barrel, which also happened to be on sale. It also came with the factory test target showing a 3 shot group of .75" or less.

I did preffer the feel of the bolt in the Model 70 and the the action in general but I have been reading very good things about the vanguards.

The Stainless/Walnut Weatherby and the Walnut/Blue Model 70 are priced within $20.

My heart is saying take the Weatherby, what do you guys say?

Any experience with these rifles?

The Weatherby is made by HOWA in Japan. A good production rifle. The Winchester is made in South Carolina, also a good production rifle.

I dont really like the Monte Carlo stock on the Weatherby. Just my opinion.

Some of that accidental discharge of the 700 is hyped up. Modified, light trigger pulls seem to be the cause of most of that. Remington is good to go, IMO.

I like the CZ550 myself and have many copies. Mauser type, control round feed and accurate. Just a tad more cash though. The scope mounting is similar to the Ruger. One of the best, IMO. CZ is my vote.

I'm not afraid of Remington either. I'd go with a youth 770 .243 bolt action. Its small, inexpensive, accurate and fun to shoot...plus its a great deer round if you hit them right.

Hamilton, the 770 is definitely cheaper, but it also feels and looks cheap and the reviews have been pretty poor.

I'm pretty sure my decision is between the Weatherby and the Winchester.

I alos "think" I've decided on the
.270 caliber.

I think it is the best compromise for what I am doing.

.243 would be a good choice as well though.

I do a lot of hunting, guns and bow. I have a .308, 30.06, .270, 300 win mag, .22, and the .308 is my go to for all big game to include yotes. If I was going to choose just one caliber to shoot it would be a .308. The reason is it's a trusted caliber and it's the same ammo the military shoot 7.62X51
Find a rifle that balanced and fits you well. Try to find a gun shop that will let you shoot their demo stuff. Just a after thought, don't go cheap on the scope if you are going to use one.. A cheap scope with cost you more in the long run. A hunting rule of thumb is the scope will run about as much as the rifle.

I'm a big fan of Savage Arms. Love my 7mm but a 270 would be a great flat shooting prairie gun

That's the model I looked as well Blake, it was a nice gun for sure.

I have decided against the Remmington, the fact that an employee had an issue with a new rifle makes me not want to own one.

I do like the Monte Carlo stock on the Weatheryby, I preffer it to the Winchester stock. I have a slight prefference for the action of the Winchester.

Accuracy reports and reviews in the gun magazines are leaning me towards the Weatherby.

Plus that Walnut stock and stainless barrel looks SWEEEEEEEt...
