Heading to AK!
Heading to AK!
This is the last post for a while since all of my household goods are getting packed tommorow, including my computer. So, Alaska members, here I come! Can't wait to get there, be in Anchorage the first week of Oct. I'll be getting ahold of a couple of ya when I get settled in. Might be a while til I am into Base Housing, so I'll miss this place while my computer is packed up! Wish me luck on the Alcan! -Steve
Hey, don't know if I missed you on here, but the Alcan isn't as bad as people say it is. I'm in Spokane, WA right now...drove from Anchorage last week. Very beautiful, but I wouldn't wanna go through there again! Wayyyy too long of a drive!
Diesel fuel is available in most places...as long as you don't let your tank get below half full you'll be alright. The snow started flying when we were in Tok and all the way over to the upper Yukon Territory. There might be 4-6" of snow on the ground by the time you pass through there. Visibility became a problem at night because the road stripes aren't very reflective...and it REALLY stinks when it rains! We had to stop driving one night because neither of us could see the road when it rained.
The border police were easy to get through also...even w/ 3 rifles. Don't worry about converting any US money to Canadian because if you use a debit or credit card the banks will automatically credit you the current exchange rate.
Fuel in southern BC was around $2.05/gal and in the upper Yukon it was around $2.30/gal.
Have a fun and safe trip!
