Has anybody tried a solar powered in window fan?
 

Has anybody tried one of those solar powered fans that has been advertised on TV lately that is supposed to keep your vehicle cool while it's sitting in the sun? They're only $14 on ebay. I've been debating ordering one to see how effective they are.

Based on you're screen-name, I'd advise you to buy one no matter what...

The only thing I have to say is that it don’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if its 105 deg outside and you put a small 2” fan in your window it will still be 105 deg minimum inside the car. A fan will not lower the temp it only moves the air and the one that is advertised on TV is to small to do any good.
But then again some people will buy anything. [duhhh]

You mean to tell me the inside of your vehicle stays the same temperature as it is outside even when it's in the sun? Of course a fan will lower the temp if it's 125+ degrees inside the car and 90 outside. I'm just wondering if this particular fan moves ENOUGH air to cool it down inside.

Commercial should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. If you blow hot air inside your vehicle, it's going to stay hot. There's no cooling mechanism in the fan to lower the temperature.

I just hope nobody leaves their dog or child in the car thinking this fan will keep them cool as the ad implies.
Or worse...I hope nobody leaves their beer in the car only to come back and have it EDIT warm! [coffee]

I understand that it's the temp of the outside air but if the outside air is 50 degrees cooler than the inside air that's a huge difference.

I've wondered the same thing. And yes, if it moves cooler outside air through your vehicle it is going to cool it down some. If it just drops it 25 degrees it would be worth it to me.

Up there it would be warm down here it would have boiled away. Thats why we true Texans never leave a beer in the truck unless empty. [laugh]

90 or 125 that little fan will not help.its a waste of money.

The fan just isn't physically large enough to move enough air to make a difference in our trucks. Maybe in a miata, but not a big dodge.

2.45Amps each! Wow!That'll take a goodly sized PV array to power that bad boy!

Last year I tried a VW Beetle solar panel and a std sized ball-bearing 12v (.2amp)Papbst boxer fan in my rear window with some stiff foam for seal.. Worked great! Really kept the temps down especially when there was no wind. It kept the interior objects cool enough I could touch them with my forearm and not wince.
It worked the best when mounted at the top of the sliding window opening where the hottest stratified air was found. I oriented it where it pulled the hot air out and if you get inside and shut the door, you can feel cool(er) air coming through the A/C vents. Not much, but some.. Leave the left rear vent window open a bit and it works very well.
