Had a bad week, needed some retail therapy.

Had a stressful week at work, seemed like everything that could go wrong, went wrong. A good friend stopped by last night, we got talking about guns, which turned into us going down to the local hardware store to window shop. He ended up leaving with an over/under mossberg maverick 12ga, and I left with a savage axis 22-250. I know it's not the highest quality piece, and it's not a large caliber, but it will do what I want around the farm, plus it should be fun at the range. Currently shooting Hornady vmax 50 grains. I only got 4 rounds through it today before it started raining, but that was enough to get work off my mind. It's shooting almost a foot to the right at 100 yards, which I think is pretty bad considering they are supposed to be factory bore sighted. I guess a day at the range is in order. This joins my winchester single shot .22lr, my .22 short pump ( my great grandfather gave me that one) and my winchester model 100 in .308.

Hope this post is in the right place, it's raining too hard to plant anything, and I'm bored.

I had it apart and lightened the trigger pull as it is pretty heavy at 5-6 lbs, clipped the spring a bit, got it down between 3-4 lbs. bought a hard case to store it in until I can afford a safe. Also bought all the 22-250 I could buy in town (9 boxes) got some different hornady, and some winchester super x, some 50, some 55 grain, see what works best. Now for the rain to stop...

22-250 is a great deer round too ! It'll come round. Savage is a good gun maker.

I have read that the modern CNC machined stuff is so much more precise than the old hand fitted stuff that many guys opt for a new rifle rather than trying to figure out why their old ones seem to not print very well...disregarding teh human factor of course!!

You are right on the target gettin after that trigger pull. First thing I usually go after also.

Have fun when the rain stops!

It may be cheap, but after looking at the one Remington wally's-mart had for $270 with a big scope, I think I'd get what you did first. Had to wiggle the bolt around to get it open and closed.

Can't remember the model number.

If elevation is correct, then it probably was. Don't forget, windage is also related to how your head is in relation to the stock, and is why consistent cheek weld is imperative. You did right by getting the Savage, other than it not having an Accutrigger, the Axis is a whale of a lot of bang for the buck, and will usually outshoot 99 percent of the people behind it's trigger.

As a matter of fact, my next bolt gun will be a Savage 12LRP rather than screw around with any of my other bolt guns trying to wring smaller groups. I can't bring myself to sell any of them, but I can't see spending any more money making them shoot smaller.

My buddy's kid picked up a 110L in .308 a few summers ago at a gunshow with a nice Nikon scope on it for under $300. Its a shooter and left handed. I scoped the bore and bet it didn't have one box of cartridges thru it!

I asked him if he would like to make a hundred bucks on it and he says no way.
