Gun purchase
if yer gonna spend the time to rack one in ill have already blown yer head off!!
right now in the supermarket remington has a good magazine out that goes into some good detail about defense rounds and weapons.
myself i have 9mm stashed in strategic spots around the house and a 12 ga ss mossberg pistol grip. but anything you pick up is ready to fire when i pull the trigger. no safety on or rackin it to run em off.
IF YOU POINT A GUN AT A HUMAN YOU HAD BETTER BE PREPARED TO GO THRU WITH IT! BECAUSE THE HUMAN YER POINTIN IT AT MIGHT BE! FOOD FER THOUGHT.
as for weapon of choice almost anything shot at anybody will make them turn and run. mostly yer lookin at thieves not wanting to die not hit men out fer yer family. whatever you feel is best for you. take a weapons course and they will let you shoot a variety of weapons.
YOU CANNOT SHOOT SOMEONE FOR STEALING FROM YOU UNLESS YOU WANNA GOT TO PRISON. YOU MUST FEEL YER LIFE OR YER FAMILY'S LIFE IS IN EMMINENT DANGER AND YOU HAVE NO OTHER ESCAPE.
unless like me you live in florida and we can kill anyone we want here. they even have it one billboards as a warning on the interstates

You break into my house, you sign your death warrant.
They say when you feel your life is in danger it is ok. Seen this happen before, someone breaks in and the person considers their house their livelyhood. Something to think about. I like the shotgun idea but its too big for me. I had a 9mm but just bout a Taurus 1911 .45 cal ACP Stainless Edition last week. All about stopping power. Plus as I said in another forum, placement is key. I may pop off 2 shots on a target if my life is in danger but I want to know one is all it will take.
there has been the rock salt discussion at shotgun world too.
I disagree with "its just a thief" theory, ALWAYS assume the worse. Its a crack head who has ONE thing on his mind and you are the scumbag in the way.
Talk to the local LEOs, they will tell you the difference between a thief and a crack head. 10 ft isn't much distance between you and the bad guy. When you squeeze the trigger, do you want to him to stop moving and start bleeding and twitching, or do you want to see if he can cover 10 ft faster than you can recover from recoil, pump in another round, and try again?

I think I am going to have to disagree with that. I would say if a guy is in my house with barking dogs and yelling people (wife trying to wake me up) and keeps coming I dont care what he has in his hands, that person is crazy/high/intent on killing and he is a dead man.

i didnt mean to say that...just to say that you cant shoot anyone just cuz theyre in yer house...then again...DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES!
and you should always assume the worst..that is true in my world as well

I hope shovelhead doesn't get mad but I borrowed his pics. The 590 is considered a tactical MIL Spec issue weapon. It comes with a parkerized finish, M7 - M9 bayonet lug, heat shield shroud (not seen in pic), can be ordered with a SPEED FEED 4 shell holder stock (seen in pic), in the pic it has a ghost ring/ tactical iron sight set up also available for most shotguns. The safety, action, and controls are identical between the 590 and 500. Both easily accept accessories such as side saddle shell holders, a variety of stocks, sights, flashlight/laser holders, etc.... My 590 with bead sight, speed feed holder stock, parkerized, B-lug, and heat shroud set me back $650 ordered. Most 500's I have seen are 300 or less, the 500 in the pic below shows a full length magazine tube,(more shells) some come with a mid length or the hunting only tubes. I prefer the full length capable of 8 2 3/4" shells. Never get killed due to lack of shooting back! The 500 has a less durable finish but it is on par with most standard weapons. Mossberg offers a variety of barrels as well so the choice you are really making is in an action.
I am glad to see quite a following of Mossberg's on here. I have nothing against Remington 870's, Winchesters, Bennelis etc.. it is a personal choice for the most part. There are some models that do not lend themselves to easy accessorize. You wont go wrong with Mossberg or Remington the others I am not so familiar with. Good luck! Get training for you and the family, practice practice!, plan and be prepared. Check your local laws on self defense, buy an hour with an attorney, ask the local PD, talk with all of the local gun shops. Don't assume because you can pull the trigger, or knock a few clays out of the sky that you are mentally, physically, and properly equipped/ prepared for that dark night when the Police are 30 min out! and it is either you or them! Be prepared in all aspects!
Study these pics the subtle differences are easy to see. (ie finish, Bayonet lug, stock, sights etc..)
590

500

Again I hope I was helpful to you!
D-C out!
PS. sorry shovelhead, I used your pics.
(great pics though!

I agree but be very careful what you advertise on a public forum. I thought this way too until my son and I took an advanced conceal carry course here in Va. It was taught by two retired LEO's and the stuff they experienced and passed on was amazing. AND, most of it was not in favor of the victim.
what can be or cant be done in self defense and what is considered "self defense" varies from state to state. Oklahoma has a castle doctrine law and a stand your ground law. While Im not a lawyer and have no direct experience between a lawyer, judge, and jury of my peers, I do have a couple LEO friends and I dont hesitate in talking to my local elected officials.

check out that thread before you load up with #8s and expect a drugged out crack head to stop.
Mossberg 500 or Mav 88 are good choices on the low end of the spectrum in price for a shotgun.
A wheel gun is simpler for most and can sit loaded for a long time.
I prefer an automatic pistol myself. I keep a 9mm loaded.
Before any purchases, remember a few things.
1. practice
2. your wife will need to learn it too.
3. practice
4. check your local laws regarding self defense. a $100 lawyer bill is pretty cheap insurance to get a solid understanding of the laws and loopholes.
5. practice
6. work out a plan with the family.
7. practice
8. dont get attached to the firearm you use for defense.
9. practice.
10. practice.

I will add one more thing, PRACTICE.
A five count box of buck shot is about $5. If your worried about over penetration, load up with the lighter buck shot
http://www.theboxotruth.com/ is a good source for penetration.
We could argue the buckshot/birdshot until the forum closes.
The way I look at the buckshot/birdshot arguement is looking at early 1900 firearms. The bullets were heavy and slow, The idea was no energy was wasted by over penetration. The problem was, the lack of pass thru meant only ONE place to bleed and a lack of temporary wound channel.
I dont have any first hand experience, I guess its time to get out and shoot my shotgun at something besides birds and clay targets.

Nirion,
Look around, and find something YOU are comfortable handling. Ask around and see if you can shoot a few friends guns to see if you prefer the pistol or shotgun. You have to have FULL confidence in the gun, whatever you chose, and be able to clear it in bad situation. I have gotten rid of ones that would jam, etc in a controlled environment, because I did not want the same to happen in an uncontrolled situation.
A healthy person can usually cover 20 feet in about 2 seconds, so you have to be of a clear mindset in the situation, and ALWAYS be ready.
Good Luck in whatever you chose, and hopefully, you will never have to put it to the "Test"
Virgil
PS my personal house gun is an old Winchester 1897 pump with an 18" barrel (It is a takedown, so I have a 30" barrel too) grew up shooting it, and still love it!
