Gopher Rifle....
I use a 22 Hornet for that kinda stuff. Its pretty quiet for a centerfire and ammo is a bit less than a 22-250 sized round. I shoot mine without hearing protection and it is not much trouble. It is louder than a 22 rimfire though.
I simply love my Hornet, but there are some times when it may not be enough in ranges past 200, but if you are using a 22LR now, you will find the Hornet more than capable without all the bang and boom of a big powder centerfire. I drop coyotes with mine at 100 plus yards without issue.
So far the Hornet has taken a dozen or more pigs ( head and heart shots ), a few dozen coyotes, and a ton of paper targets. Most loads are under 12 grains of powder and around a 35-45 grain bullet depending on brand, etc.
Thats my choice, but all three of my boys shoot either a 17 mach2 or the 17 HMR. My neighbors boy killed a coyote with his dinky little 17mach2 with a neck shot at about 25 yards away. It dropped right there. I was shocked. We were not even hunting coyotes and this thing ran right up close to us. Wrong place, wrong time for him. I have more rimfires than most gun stores at any one time and the HMR is a sweet little cartridge for laser tight shots past 100 yards of the wind is calm.
My choice in this order: 22 Hornet, 17HMR and 22 Magnum a tie. 22 magnum cartridges loaded by RWS are the best thing you can get and they will flatten a gopher within 100 yards. I have killed pigs with head shot using my 22 Magnum.
Dang I am rambling again. back to work for me.................
have fun

Volquartsen Custom is the only company that builds a factory 17 HMR semiauto. The price ranges from $1100 to $1600. Magnum Research is the only company that builds a factory 17 M2 semiauto. The price ranges from $670 to $820. That being said a Ruger 10/22 can be modified to fire the 17 M2. Keith

There is a good site. The factory bolt handle needs to be changed for a heavier one. The 17 M2 has a "sharper" recoil due to it's higher velocity. Check out this site, http://www.eabco.com/hornady17hm2.html Keith
