Froze to Death.....
Now this better not be a lame **** reason to justify a lack of organization and decision making. Them being on drugs has nothing to do with the INITIAL search efforts.
granted, I am sure they were really confused and reported a bogus location or something to that effect. This makes it extremely difficult to find them even with the proper search efforts.
meth - slowly killing our youth. it's a **** shame. JMHO - JKE

I've always kept a bit of water (gets used a lot during the summer), food (Bush's bean, canned fruit, granola bars), a fleece comforter, a blanket, a couple of fleece sweaters, gloves and glove liners, watch caps, ponchos, pruning saw, hatchet, a military folding shovel, fire extinguisher, heavy string, cord, rope, jumper cables, tarp, fixed blade knife, flares, swiss knife, flashlights, extra batteries, first aid kit, matches, BIC lighters, qt pot, some hand tools, a box of .357 ammo, and packs/tool bag/sport bags to keep the stuff in. It's a lot of stuff, some of it needs refreshing a couple of times a year, but it seems to get used here and there. The kits changes, and I have fun stocking it with stuff on sale, like $5 fleece sweaters, 5 packs of military glove liners for $10, $5 Mora knives, etc.
The intent is to be able to keep the wife and three kids relatively comfortable for up to a couple of days, in the event of whatever. Friends and coworkers use to snicker, bragging about only needing a cell phone and their AAA card, until the one to two hundred motorists got stranded in southern Oregon last winter during a heavy snowstorm, and more than a few news reports mentioned people getting stranded around here. Even a big accident on a highway can shut it down for half a day, so having something to munch on just makes time easier to deal with.

Stolen from another thread....
"Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity." - From the Notebooks of Lazarus Long by Robert A. Heinlein

the 911 tape
concerning the tapes, were the kids too stoned to take their peril seriously? Were they all giggles? Did they call anyone else in addition to 9-1-1? I guess now we know why they couldn't tell the dispatcher where they were. Sounds to me their only hope was an enhanced cell tracking system. I bet the dispatcher(s) still taking it pretty hard though.
The other thing to remember is you could have had a millon people to search for them but if you don't know where to start looking it's hard to search. You have to take into account the safety of the people searching if it was that cold and the weather was that bad it's hard to justify risking more lives. People also have to take some resposibility for their own safety. They were out doing drugs and driving, they went of road with no provisions or calling anyone to come get them. They left their vehicle without any type of winter clothes on, they left their shelter once they found some. They didn't call for help until how long after they got stuck. The dispatcher could only go by the information he was given, or was able to solicit from the people.
It was definitely a tragedy but you can't protect everyone, or save them when they get into trouble.

Man that sucks!.....
........ I'm never wrong!
Tonight at 9:00 (Central Time) Prime Time Live is going to air a special on this tragedy. It might be a good time for all of you parents of young kids to ahve them listen to the 911 tapes where you can hear these two college age kids haluciate, and become delusional on meth.
Its pretty hard to listen to two kids die from exposure when all they had to do it stay with the truck.

Chrisreyn, that was a wise elder indeed! I'm gonna' keep and use that one!
The prevailing opinion by the "average" public is that our authorities (police, fire-EMS, military etc) can protect and rescue us from all things. This is what is being preached through media sources etc.
That is the farthest from the truth!!(I just LOVE the Cel phone and AAA card mentality!)
We, as in each individual, must do our utmost to be responsible, prepare and protect ourselves first and foremost and not rely solely on overburdened authorities in an emergency. (Especially an emergency that we have created and placed ourselves in!)
I for one will likely watch that special on TV tonight. I really hope that they pound home the message about dangers of Meth drug use. I also hope they do not try to make it into anyone else's fault, as is so often the case nowadays!

Geico, Now we know, the last hours were horrible to hear. No wonder everyone in Nebraska got so passionate about getting an enhanced 9-1-1 system, who could stand living thru that again? Wow that was heavy. Because you had already shared their plight here I was able to warn the wife the ending was not gonna be a happy one, but I sure wish it had.
I was young and foolish once too.

I saw the show last night and remembered this thread. Darn shame that it happened. After hearing the tapes you sure cant blame the authorities for it. Should they have the enhanced 911 system sure they should but those things arent cheap. And if they purchased the system something else in the budget would have had to be cut to pay for it like less manpower on the streets or less 911 operators etc. Or raise taxes to pay for it and we know how well that goes over. It is shame that it takes a situation like this to bring about change but still that budget is going to get cut somewhere else and then when that cut befalls a tradegy they will get ripped on that too. No one can protect everyone from everything. Sometimes bad things happen to good people and sometimes good people make bad decisions. A definite tragedy that could have been avoided in a number of ways.
My heart and prayers go out to all the affected people.

Actually, Bush opened the tap with homeland security funding. We have upgraded from this and are capable of recievign the data. It's the cell providers dragging their heels. We are at phase II and capable of recieving tracking info, it's just not getting hear yet. Even when they do, the technology won't help the phones that already exist. And because the FCC, we can't even track those wonderful "donated" phones to stop all the prank calls. Literally 100's every day. Have one calling repeatedly as I type this. I did not see the show and only know what I've read hear about the case, but we were able to try something else. When the guy threatened to blow up Cheney, we were able triangulate at the liesure of the cell company, and at least know which city to concentrate in. That only works if the phone is still on or good batteries. You also have to know which company it is. People transferring numbers (again, FCC brain fart) is eliminating or slowing the ability to identify which company to contact. Most of the time, roaming on a different providers tower does not transfer caller info either. But as we mumble every day "What did we do before cell phones?"
