Re:Flying

Man, I have been there. One of my older brothers is a pilot and a CFI (certificated flight instructor) I have done all the ground school and have just about 30 hours in flight time and then I get way too busy to complete the process and had to drop it.
Can I fly a plane? yep...Do I want to?...yep! Do I have time? nope!!

Perhaps she will have a change of heart and you will be able to continue. I figure I will get to complete mine after the kiddos get a few years older and more self sufficient.

After you get really into flying its nice to be able to go and gas up the plane and fly to say.....Florida or wherever without worries of freaks on the plane with you, security checks, etc.

When I go to the ranch in West Texas or Oklahoma area we jump in the piper and fly up. The small airport is 10 miutes away and hardly ever a wait for anything ;D

Don~

Re:Flying

Yea you got the bug too. I started several years ago when I was stationed in Miss. Moved to Ky and continued off and on for a bit. Been flying 152's and 150's. All I
got left is my long Xcountry and the 3 hours of final before checkride. Tried the old "safer than driving" bit but the wife is disabled and now really worries. Well some day in the future maybe. Maybe she will feel different when the old checkbook looks better. Just think, a shined up dually and a hundred dollar hamburger. ;D ;D

Re:Flying

Sherod, what made your wife think flying is dangerous? Something (real or imagined) had to have happened to have caused this. You need to find the root casue of her fears. Exactly what steps have you taken to assure her that it is not dangerous?
This is a delicate situation but with the right 'ammunition' perhaps you can get her to change her mind.
I have been flying general aviation aircraft for many years and have soloed on over 50 types, singles, twins, floats etc. Have done many test flights and first flights after major repairs. Even done some first flights on homebuilts. Flying is NOT dangerous, but some people THINK it is without any facts to back up their fears. What have you done to convince her that the aircraft itself is mechanically safe, shown her how they are checked, maintained etc? Have you considered having her take a co-pilots course? One for wives?
There are many options to consider. There has to be one or more to suit your particular situation. Don't give up yet.

Re:Flying

Mexstan I am working on it. Background is she has been around military aircraft for years. She is one of the best avionics techs I have ever worked with. Her fear seems to stem from her disability and the fact that she is worried that something might happen to me. That would leave her in a fix as her whole family has fractured and no longer communicates. She will most probably be more agreeable when she comes to grips with that issue. Not much I can do to help on that one, but be supportive and have a little compassion. Not really too upset as I understand her distress. I am going to let it lay low for a while and see what happens. She knows it has been a desire for me to fly as we have had many good discussions about it and she even was getting me some heavy simulator time at UPS before she got ill. The log still counts, time is in the bank. My medical is good for another year and so is my ground school. If I have to wait longer than that so be it.
Ed
