Angry Flippin Cougars

So on the way to go see my brother and his girlfriend for dinner I am driving down the drive way and as usual I look at the horses as I drive by and one of my geldings is laying down. So I stop and toss a rock over by him and he don't move. So I climb over the fence and his head lifts up but real lethargic like. I get him up and his leg is hamburger i can see tendons an every thing so by this time I am in M.A.S.H. mode. I get him up and i notice his back has back and muzel has signs of a cat attack. After walking the entire pasture I found were something had run him in to the fence and were he got tangled in it. Were it happened was a corner that a horse would not go near unless run in to. So I am on high alert i have brought all the horses up in the yard tell this guy is laying in the back of my pickup. kind of neat havin 8 horses mowin my lawn though HA

I hope he is going to be O.K. do you think it is life threatening?

I had a black bear that kept chasing my horse. I called the DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) and they just pretty much blew me off. I called the next time it happened. Still blew me off. So, I put Mr. Remington 30.06 by the door. Well. 2 weeks later there it was chasing my horse once again. (My horse was not in her fenced pasture any of these times, just grazing in an open field thank God.).
I dropped him and then called the DNR and told them to come get their dead bear.. I had to report it, If I would have got caught I would have lost my job..

They were ****** !! Questioned me 4 different times and tried to make an example out of me for sure. Even went to where I work and asked questions... They could not charge me for shooting the bear but they REALLY wanted to bad...
Moral of the story is if you do see this cougar just remember the three "S" rule. Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up !!! I hope you get him for your horses sake....

I had a cat attack a mule tied to a picket line while on a pack trip several years ago. Occurred in middle of night and by the time I realized what was going on and got the flash light to see the cat was pretty well locked onto the mules neck, fired a shot into the air and cat ran off. Mule survived but lost left eye. Actually mule continued to serve me well for many more years. Scary moment tho.

Man, that's too bad. I hope you get rid of that cat soon. There seem to be a lot more around, since Oregon banned using dogs to hunt.

A few years back there was one down by the creek right next to St. Mary's school, and I think it was the dept of fish and wildlife that came out to shoot it (it was also acting strange). I've seen one other one in town, jumping between people's yards on Mt. Hood street.

Some authorities can be kind of nutty when you report something like that. ODFW here, though, might offer to track and kill it for you.

Our DNR is finally beginning to acknowledge there may be cats here after a horse got mauled down Chaikwa's way a couple years a go. It had to be put down. A deputy and a few others confirmed a sighting outside of the Battle Creek area too. I know a few others including another deputy that have seen them further up-state as well.

I think Ned and Jimbo from South Park have the best idea, "Shoot it's comin right for us!"

I know the ranchers in my area have problems with cats and there cattle. They practice that "3 S" rule. These animals now days seem to have more rights then humans. I understand that with them trying to repopulate the wolf, that there actually decimating some of the elk herds in the north.

Glad to hear the horse is doing OK. I'd probably give Brad at Animal Control a call. I think he keeps track of events like this, and could probably fill you in on what ODFW or whoever could do for you.

Let us know how it turns out.

Vet said was not a cat attack but something defiantly ran it in to the fence I have no neighbors and both my dogs were in the shop with me. Dad said he seen a bunch of coyotes running from the field were the horse were at. So I thinking the coyotes spooked the horses and ran him in the fence. Horse had one torn tendon and a hamburger leg but the swelling is down and he is walking on on it and doing awesome so he will pull out of this just fine. So he is stalled and enjoying the warm barn and lots of hay and attention ever day cleaning the bandage. There is a cougar running around here some were though we seen him down in the feed lot last winter with the cows so I have my rifle in my pickup just in case.
