You can usually figure loose dirt at .66 percent of compacted dirt. We usually figure a tandem load at 8 yards loose when taking off cost of trucking dirt. Clay will run at 3000 lb. a yard loose depending on moisture.

Vis-a-vis the amount of dirt in a cubic yard. My guess would be 1 yard in a shortbox, full to the rails, levelled. 1.5 in a long box. You might haul that much black dirt, but don't try it with gravel. Hard on suspensions. 1 cubic yard will cover 81 sq. ft. (9X9) 4 inches deep. 54 sq. ft (6X9) 6 inches deep. Learned all this when I hauled ready mix concrete. I find it the easiest way to visualize how much is required.
