Ebay?

Have any of you guys bought a truck or any other type of high dollar thing from ebay? I am bidding on a nice used truck right now and I am up to $19,200. I am kinda nervous about all the things that could possibly go wrong. ??? : [undecided]

Re:Ebay?

My opinion is that if all these people are doing it, it can't be all that risky.

If it was all such a big scam or a major problem, I think eBay would have discontinued the eBay Motors section a long time ago. And we would have heard many big news stories on how people are getting scammed out of thousands of dollars.

Let's face it. You can find some amazing deals on eBay and thousands of people bid on these vehicles and win everyday. It's hard to believe that we wouldn't have heard something negative by now about it.

Also, if you are really uncomfortable about it, eBay offers some kind of escrow service for a fee. It's been a while since I was into the eBay scene, so I don't remember exactly what the entails, but I think it was along the lines that the truck would be shipped somewhere and inspected before it came to you. Might want to check it out.

Re:Ebay?

Remember to check the seller's feedback comments. There is a guy selling vehicles out of Winnepeg, Manitoba with a rating of minus three (-3); a person would be crazy to send this guy a cent. Also, you can contact buyers that have purchased from the seller before.

Re:Ebay?

Ya the guy has never sold on ebay before but he has bought stuff and I looked at those comments and they were good. I just get nervous spending $20k+ over the internet with someone I've never met. Well, first time for everything I guess.

Re:Ebay?

Utilize the escrow service. Treat the whole situation as a business deal. Cheats do exist on Ebay. Not to cause you any further worry, but some new sellers have been known to build up their feedback (others comments) by being good buyers than becoming sellers. I haven't been on the eBay scene for awhile but one of the hints I found on the boards was to contact the seller (for high ticket items) and advise them that you would be utilizing an escrow service to complete the transaction and then sit back and see what the seller has to say. I've done this a couple of times (but certainly not on as high a ticket item as you're talking about) and they responded back with, "not a problem", but then they had high seller feedback accounts too. Course, I'm admittedly prejudiced in that I'm a kick the tires type of guy.

~Dave

Re:Ebay?

My girlfriend bought a 1980 Mercedes 450SL from someone on eBay, which turned out to be quite a good car and a lot cheaper than what they go for here. I'm not sure if she used the escrow service or not, since it was her money and not mine. It was a lot less money than what you're talking about, too. On a deal worth that much, I'd definitely want to use the escrow and reserve the right to reject the deal if it turned out to have been misrepresented.

Re:Ebay?

Luke, you probably know this but, if there's 3 or 4 days left in the auction don't bid the price up anymore this early. There is often a flurry of bidding near the end. I saw the listing and it certainly appears to be legit, for whatever that's worth :.

Re:Ebay?

Ya that's the same strategy I had. I'm gonna sit tight. I've got a number in my head and I am telling myself I am not going over it. I doubt I'll get it. But I'm gonna give it a shot. I think the guy is probably legit, but like I said, I'm gonna jump up and spend 20K+ for something I can't see from somebody I don't know. But the pics look good, and I think everything is gonna come out all right. I got in early and now I am gonna sit tight. I think I can buy that truck, drive it a little, then put it on the lot and retail it and make a few bucks. I think a guy could make a little money buying trucks off of ebay and turning around and retailing em. I can't keep a used diesel on my lot more than a couple a days. These dang things are worse than money. I'm tellin you a good used CTD is better than money in the bank

Re:Ebay?

Sure, I'll buy anything if I can make some CASH$$$. I've never been brave enough to buy anything off there before but there are some good deals on used stuff to be had if you look hard enough. Some of the stuff is rediculously high on price on ebay, but every once in awhile you'll finda diamond in the rough.
