Morning Scott. I started to leave the water run but I didn't think it was going to get this cold until Thursday. Oh well, just got to wait it out and see if I get to play plumber of couch potato. The last time I had this problem, it was plumber. That's when I found out the idiot we bought this house from used the cheap Chinese pipe in the garage. It has a really thin wall and you can damage it easily with a map gas torch.

Back when we were on the farm our pipes would freez in the well pit
found that hanging a 150w lt bulb in there with a canvas over the pit would keep it warm enough so it didnt freez !

also found it light went out it would freez and by just replacing the bulb and the canvas it would thaw out the pipes !

it was an inexpensive selution to a major pain in the hini !

 

Now I KNOW you're telling stories... back when you were on the farm, indoor plumbing hadn't even been thought of yet and 'running water' meant the stream out back of the barn.

I'm betting he didn't have a barn, probably just a saw garage.

If it doesn't break loose soon I'll move a heater out there and start warming up the garage.

 

Actully well house? milk house was between barn`s & house with a goon long run to the barns & the house - & suprisingly the only place we had a problem was the well pit in the well house

 

Makes sense, that's where the water was.

 

in the milk house portion it had a square watter tank probably 6w& 4 l with two steel doors on top -milk cans would sin in it with about 2 in to spare -
there was an overflow pipe about eaven with the bottumn of the neck of the cans - a pipe through the side of the tank with a valve on it - in warm weather water from the well would flow in to the tank to cool the milk and the overflow would keep the watter at a level just below the neck of the cans-
eaven back in the day there were a lot of laws to follow to be able to sell milk- the watter flowing would keep the tank & milk cool enough to pass inspection -
also had to have a seperate hot hot watter heater for milk house for washing utinsels after milking they eaven tested that watter temp.

Trad, glad you are home, 9-20 degrees here steady but never had to worry about frozen pipes. (built our own house, barn, excavated and dug the well)
how about just keeping the light on in the garage? like Claude says, little heat from the bulb works wonders. hope it warms up for you guys soon!

it would seam if you can get to them with torch that they are
there are simple things you can do to protect them - they have fome insulation (preformed) that will slip over the pipes -this also stops condensation in hot humid weather -
box in the area and put light bulb with thurmostat in it -
if you only have to use it once in three years its worth the cost and trouble

There's better than 40' of pipe in there and it's all wrapped with foam but near the pressure reducer it could be better. That area is also against the outside wall. I had a small tarp and just finished hanging it up on a couple nails. That will hopefully keep it from spraying everywhere if it's going to bust. Hung a trouble light in with it. It's not much heat but it's some. I put the light right where I think the problem is so we'll just have to wait it out. As long as the light and the tarp don't become friends, I'm good. If it does go to spraying the light, the breaker should trip. If I just had a baby monitor I could stop running outside every 20 minutes.

 

you do have the cold watter turned on so it can flow when it thaws don`t you ?

It's almost 0* today! Supposed to warm up more also.

Sorry 'bout the frozen pipes T-rad. If you narrow down the frozen spot, you can use a welder to thaw the section of pipe fairly easily. Also, like OD said, a light bulb running in the right spot works wonders. I've thawed lots of wl heads that way.

Kids go back to school today. Gonna meet with my gym partner and go running this morning. I don't like running but I gotta
do it.

And my DL is going to expire this week.

Please, please, PLEASE don't do that! I can't begin to count the number of house fires I've been to that were caused by someone thawing pipes with a torch. All it takes is the flame to touch a cobweb and the whole place goes up like it was soaked in gasoline. Those things are flammable beyond belief!
