DPMS rifles
Anyone know anything about these guys? Do they put out good weapons. I want to start ..planning.. my ideal AR. Ya never know when we'll need to bugout, and I want to have the ultimate AR on my side. Looking at something like this, http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=4709
Or if you have anyother mfgs you reccomend, lets here em. I like Knights Armament co too, but they look like $$$$$ and I haven't seen prices, anywhere. They may be just LE and military only.
Thanks a bunch,
Josh

For the fun of it, lets say 2 grand. I know I want an Aimpoint and a Surefire of some sort. I know that's a moot point, but 2 grand for everything, minus extra mags etc. All I really want is some rails, Aimpoint, Surefire, adjustable trigger, colappsable carbine buttstock, ergogrip. I dunno, just thinking lol
Although I thoroughly despise all the "tacticool" accessories, I think DPMS makes a fine rifle.
However if you want the best return for your dollar a Colt M4/6920LE (I think) would be a better choice...
If you do get a DPMS I would make sure it comes with a chrome lined barrel/chamber.
Mags are cheap right now buy all you can while you can....
Ammo for the .223/5.56 is pretty high at the moment: $230 +/- 1000 rounds.
In my honest opinion if you like the .223/5.56 as a round you'll love the Russian 5.45x39mm cartridge that is used in their AK74. The ammo is relatively dirt cheap at the moment $130/1000 rounds.
You won't beat the reliabilty of the AK platform and despite what most ignorant people think the AK is actually quite accurate if you know how to shoot one.
Not mine but a fine example:

BTW: Been there done that with the AR15 thing.

dpms is a fine rifle.
if you have that kinda budget, go for one of the ABCRs
Armalite
Bushmaster
Colt
RockRiver Arms
Those are considered the top tier rifles.
Personally, if none of these companies offer exactly what you want, a Kit will save you some money and keep you from having a pile of parts tempting you to build a second rifle. Which leads to the dreaded BRD.

Colt
Bushmaster
Rock River Arms
CMMG
LMT
Armalite
I highly recommend reading THIS.
I did a lot of research just a few months ago in preparation for my first AR purchase. Ultimately I decided to pay a little more and get the one that the majority of folks seemed to think was the best, so I bought the Colt 6920LE M4 Law Enforcement Carbine. I've only shot it once since getting it, but for now I couldn't be happier with it.
Good luck with your search. I think if you stick with one of the brands mentioned above then you'll be happy.
By the way, if you don't mind a scratch or two you might check out the CMMG Bargain Bin.

There are several people on arfcom that have the cmmg bargin bin rifle and they like them.
I've heard good things about DPMS. Then again, just like our trucks here - I've also heard of some not-so-fond things about some of the rifles in Hoss' list - but not many.... and they're usually corrected without issue very quickly.
Before you dive in, go take a look at the Robinson Arms XCR's - neat stuff; and they do take some of the AR15 accessories.
FWIW, I've got lowers and uppers from Bushy and Rock River here and like them a lot. After spending enough $$ on Surefire rail systems and SOCOM stocks, etc. I am not going to spend the dough on an ACOG, but am planning on picking up an EOTech one of these days.

Honestly, I dont think brand has anything to do with quality.
Get a chrome lined chamber. It will last longer and be easier to clean.
Get the extractor "D" ring. This puts more pressure on extractor and causes it to hold tighter to the brass during extraction. Solving some FTE problems.
Get the assembly manual from ar15.com and learn how to assemble and disassemble your rifle. Learn how to clean and maintain it.
One of the things to remember at ar15.com, This is many of the guys.

While there are a few that are involved in tactical training, active military, recently retired military, or what ever that involved them legitimately shooting 20,000 rounds per year, there aren't many there, but their advice is good.

That's hilarous Fronty. I aint doing anything right now, but just starting to look. I'll check out that website. I think if I do anything, I'll just buy the base rifle, although a good one, and then build it up as I deem it necessary. Kind of like with our trucks. No sense in spending 2500 bucks on gadgets I don't need, right?
Just in case you missed this above, I HIGHLY recommend reading THIS.
Disclaimer: I can't actually access that link from work so if it's not a very detailed article written about AR's and brands then please let me know. But, if it's the article it's supposed to be then I found it to be tremendously helpful.
