Does anyone haul the US Mail as a contractor?
We are looking for info and for the life of me the person I have spoken to at the main transportation office is clueless, any pros and cons of doing this sorta work, how do you like it, and hows the pay? we are looking at running 2 straight trucks so the routes wont be to bad that we bid on, Thanks for any info.
i have a client that does, he has always worked a job and paid an employee to drive the mail truck. Seems to be pretty good money. Fuel cost is a big factor as it is with my farming and logging clients as well. You will be self employed so you will have both parts of social security to pay which is .1530 on top of reg income tax but you will be the boss.
I'm a Postmaster and deal with the HCR's on a daily basis but don't have anything to do with the pay side. I do know that our carriers work 6 days a week with a split shift each day (Ours brings us the mail from the plant and takes our outgoing mail to the plant). Be sure and bid high enough to cover your fuel expenses, ins., etc but I figure you've already thought about that. Also, you do get paid for any additional trips you make...at least our guys do.
I myself wouldn't do it unless you can afford to pay someone else to drive for you. The way our route is laid out, the driver has 6 hrs of downtime a day and the route ends 50 miles away from his vehicle. So he must either stay there until the afternoon when he runs the route in reverse to pick up outgoing mail, or have another car to go home in.
It's a crappy schedule for sure, but if it's what you want to do, go for it.
