It is pretty wide open in Western Kansas. I have done that route as well as cuttin through backroads through Dodge City, etc. The salina route is a much easier drive, but time wise, I think they were pretty close (though we got stuck in some toll road traffic north of the Oklahoma border)
Are ya in a hurry or goin fer the scenic route?
In a hurry I-70 to Salina and south is the fastest, the prettyiest is south out of Denver to Rantoul NM, then east to OKC....... been both ways several times, the south route adds about two hours...

Not sure whether it's all done yet or not, but there were large sections of I-70 in KS completely torn up to be rebuilt a couple of years ago when I went through there. They might be done by now, though. AAA might know.
