Thumbs down Cost of changing front wheel spindle assy

My brother had a front wheel bearing come apart on a Dodge 1500 5.9 gasser. The truck was still drivable. Called around to locate a work shop that would work on the truck. None of the shops around Alexandria, La would touch the Dodge. All told him that Dodge dealer was the only ones that could change the assy (pressing out the old ball joints and pressing in the new) So off to Dodge he went, Estimate for just passenger side, get this, $2400. Its a 98' / 2WD, Does this seem right. I'm scared to ever have to get the front of my 2500 worked on. Just

Regards,
Gene

Is the truck under warranty? Seems fishy to me. Are the parts available? It also seems odd that the spindle would be damaged. Couldn't they just change the bearings and races and put in a new seal?

Am I missing something here?

Heck! Somebody on here will probably offer to fix it for you for a tad bit less. (Say $1500.00)

There should be '98s available in the salvage yards. I've never worked on one of those but that price seems way out of line to me. That probably includes everything from the A-arms out brand new. Get another estimate in my opinion.

i have a 2001 3/4 4x4 CTD. i changed the wheel bearing on it and it cost me 370.00 for the assembly. it was a bit of a mother , well you know, i had to get a pulley removing tool, my half inch impact, a 2lb hammer, and a dictionary of profanities to use in order to change it. after swearing enough to make a sailor blush i got the thing out and in. 2400 sounds outrageous, but i'll drive down from arkansas pick it up bring it here and do it for you then return it to you for that amount. lol

It's a 2WD, not a 4X4. I can understand a 4X4 being a bit more difficult but a 1/2 ton simple spindle? Heck I'd do it for plane fare and a six-pack.

Unless there's something special about this beast but I don't think so.
