common problems with 4.7 magnum
I just purchased a 2004 Dodge 1500 quad cab auto with a 4.7L magnum engine. I was wondering if there are any common problems I should watch out for or just any thing at all with these trucks to be careful about. Oh yea it also has 60,000 mi on it currently.
A good friend of mine has a Durango with the 4.7. I haven't heard of any complaints, and I'm sure I'd be the one fixing it if it broke. He did have some trouble with the alternator wiring, but it was because the PO had hacked into for his stereo.
Might check out a Durango BB and ask the question there. If I remember correctly there was some folks stating their engine was fried 'cause of oil problems. Sludge was building up and causing the engines to seize. Something to do with the oil galleries being small in some areas, or something.
Some had done their own service and didn't have proper records and had to pay for repairs themselves. Anyways, check it out for your own understanding.
I've got a Durango with the 4.7. I change the oil myself and use mobil 1 in it just for the benefit of additional lubrication.

I ran a 4.7 in a 02 Dakota before getting the 2500. I thought it was a great motor, but they do sludge easily; I have heard this from about every dealer I took it to. It started getting a pretty good amount of tick from the valve train around 90k, too. Use good oil and change it regularly and you probably won't have a problem.
