Coal Burning

Anyone here burn coal during the winter? Such as in a coal burning stove...strictly to supplement an already existing heat system(baseboard). How does it compare to wood burning. Cheaper, less or more maintenance etc.

Thanks

hi i use a keystoker for my main heating. with the price of firewood its cheaper to heat with coal it also heats my domestic hot water and in the coldest weather you only have to fix it once a day.

I also have a keystoker, in my mind they are the best, better than the Alaska I had, mine is the 90000 BTU direct vent one,the direct vent seems worth the extra money in my opinion, easy to use, set thermostat, put coal in, take ash out, clean every couple weeks depending on consumption,
Mine burns rice or buckwheat coal, sure is a lot cheaper than gas
Less maintenance than wood, since there isn't the creosote.

I use an AHS multi fuel boiler. I burn about 90% coal 10% wood. I have a 3,500 sq. ft. log home on a wind swept FREEZING mountain and i only spend $250 last year to heat the house and my hot water...
Here is an excellent site full of people that heat with coal.

MY AHS is made to burn soft coal or bituminous coal. This coal is alot cheaper than anthracite ( about $50 a ton ) and it also has the oil backup unit that kicks on once the coal fire burns out. I pt this boiler inside my detached garage and it works WAY,WAY better than my wood eating outdoor wood boiler I used to have. It is just alot more efficient and I don't freeze to death standing outside in the zero degree weather anymore.
