BEST anti-virus software

I need to get a new anti-virus software as my macafee expired (finally) and the old 'puter is runing kinda sloooooooooooooooooooow lately.

What's the best one that's readily available? (and costs less than a new computer)

I'll be reading this in the AM and will be purchasing new software on the way home tomorrow.

Currently running Windows XP.

Symantec is pretty good it's what we use at work and i used to have it. Now i have McAfee because it's free with my Comcast. It works good and has blocked many attacks.

I was running the same as you because it came with the putter. When it ran out my son put on Norton. When that ran out just before Christmas he put Kaspersky on. Seems to be working for me and is faster that Norton for sure. He's a putter geek and said that it's good but I think they are all decent. Didn't really like McAfee. Just my 0.02

Ford owns Symantec

On a serious note, Avast is great...and best of all, FREE.

I work at a university supporting the wireless network for students and the best thing I've found for free is AVG. Free for personal use. Make sure you download Ad-Aware and Spybot (free also) to take care of spyware. Spyware is almost a bigger hassle now than virus'.

I've been a die hard user of Bitdefender. Very powerful software, great updates and not too expensive. However if you want free, you can't go wrong with AVG.

Wow! Cant believe this hasnt gotten heated yet. I am paying the bucks for symantec only because my computer gets used occasionally by kids. If it was just me, I would still be using AVG but it let a nasty bug from a P to P site (sister in-laws kids) through about a year ago. Symantec slows the computer down and costs but does a good job.

Just switch to Linux and you won't have to worry about it, lol. Your computer will be faster than the day you bought it also.

I'm with Travis I switched cold turkey over a year ago, and haven't looked back.

I did use AVG before then though.

Kaspersky is one of the best ones I've used. The other ones are free for a reason...

I am using Norton Internet Security on most of my networks and have no problems except for when someone lets in the problems.
I have sensitive data on my computer that cannot be compromised.
It is bad when you loose your identity but unacceptable when you loose someone else’s.
I have client’s personal information on my computer.

Norton here Ed, remember to download the add-ons. Like others have said, it is a little slower, especially on the start-up but I have never had anyone get through to my computer. I tried McAffee once, never again.
