Aww Man...

Had one of those Aww Man moments last night. Took the wife out for a little Valentines dinner. it was raining, so i thought I'd be the man and go get the truck brought up to the door so she wouldn't have to walk in the rain. As i started to backup, making sure i was looking good due to the tight parking lot, I felt a bump, then a guy stands up from behind the tailgate. Someone had pulled up right close behind me in some sort of tiny car, that was completely hidden behind the tailgate. Truck only moved about 8 inches and pressed a nioce likeness of a 2" ball into his door.

I watched the same exact thing happen on a bigger scale at our shop once. Guy was backing up a tractor trailer back up the road cuz he overshot our parking lot. A lady was sitting at the end of an alley in a pickup, saw him coming, and instead of backing up or pulling into the road (no traffic at all) she just sat there and watched.... well the tractor had no way at all of seeing her and bumped into her, ever so slightly. Hardly even rocked the pickup, just knocked off some rust. Well she got out and threw an absolute fit, called the cops, wanted to press charges. Then an EMS shows up...she complained about her neck hurting. It was about that time I walked over and insisted I give a witness report.

Needless to say, I hate stupid people.

Oh well. One of those things in life that happens. He did say he never noticed me about to backup. I don't know how he didn't hear the strait pipe blowing right at his window. There was a gal sitting in the passenger seat. I figured she would be peeling off a seat cover, but she didn't even flinch. Sher didn't even get out of the car or even looked concerned about anything going on. He had his eye on another spot soon to become available and was tucked up close behind me so he could swing wide to get into that spot. I don't know why though, cause his car was small enough to u-turn in a parking spot. I'm just so thankful I never gooses it any cause that girl sting there would have been hurt real bad. The guy didn't pitch any kind of fit at all.

That sucks... How was that issued resolved? I've been told that if an accident happens on private property then no one is help responsible.

I don't know yet. it just happened last night. My ins company said it would be considered a no fault situation. Not sure what that means exactly. I thought it might mean that each person takes care of their own damage, but googling it I got that it meant that the fault will be determined based on facts reported of what happened and either party cannot seek more than just the reported damages, and it went on to explain that as someone can't say later now their transmission stopped working because of this or a week later my neck suddenly hurts. I think the guy in the car is partially responsible for being silly enough to stop behind a larger truck with reverse lights on, and because his car he chose to drive is small enuff to be hidden in just about every blind spot possible. My insurance company said they would contact him and his insurance company and deal with it. I can watch the claim online so time will tell. I wouldn't be surprised if my insurance company didn't cover his damage, because of the location that it happened at and companies do seem to be less happy to issue checks to people these days.

It means your ins pays for your damage if any, and his pays for his, at least how it worked in a past situation. Nobody is held liable, no blame.

I have Geico. I hope it doesn't work out that the guy gets stiffed. I kinda feel at fault. He does have insurance. His dad officially owns the car.

If there's a way to stiff him, Geico will find it. They might be a good company to have on your side, but they are horrible to work with when the claim is against them.

Similar thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. Backed into a Toyota (I still have no idea where he came from). Anyway I just bumped into him - $4000+ damage to the Toyota - $0 damage to the mighty Dodge. Didnt even scratch the paint on the hitch. I am glad I didnt have the drawbar and ball in the hitch.

Whats with body shops these days? $90 an hour for labour and quadrupling the cost of parts...unbelievable.

Oh yeah, of course it was my fault because I was in reverse. This was my first accident in 20+ years of driving. I guess sooner or later - it can happen to anyone.

Come down to where i'm living now, just north of norfolk, va. They just had an article in the paper that this area has the most accidents in the country. Someone is killed every 2.5 days. And the way some of these ppl drive 'round here, it doesnt surprise me at all

its crazy. they don't even do much body work anymore. mostly what they do is swap parts now and days. yet they still charge a crazy price for everything. its like body work has become a lost art.

1-2-3, i hate that it happened to you...hopefully everything gets worked out the right way for you.
