In the small computer shop I worked in for the GOV, we took whatever was on for antivirus off and installed avast to find all the stuff symantec and mcafee would miss. I have used it at home for quite a few years now and have loved it all the way. It is easy systems low on resources. best of all its free. I liked it well enough to think about paying for it few times.

Another vote for Avira AntiVir (AVG), I use it on every pc I own or have owned and never had a problem that couldn´t be dealt with. I used Norton before and that made the whole system really slow. It´s fast, it´s free, updates every day.

But Avast sounds good either, maybe I´ll give it a try.

I have AVG on one and Avast on another. The third one is running Ubuntu Linux. If you don't need all the Microsoft stuff, Linux is a great alternative.

Well, I have a few things to add.

When you UNinstall norton, you HAVE to go through your computer through search and DELETE anything that has Norton or Symantec in its name. it will "uninstall" but get rid of itself. Then find some place on the internet to guide you through step by step to get rid of it in the registry. That is the only way to fully get rid of it. I know, we tried to uninstall it and install AVG, and the computer kept freezing. This was 5 or so years ago but then, they did not LIKE each other.

AVG Free is one of the BEST! Hands down!

To cure any problems, and all you do is some word processing, get a laptop or desktop in the last 2-3 years and install Fedora 12's KDE operating system, then download openoffice for your Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access, Publisher like programs. They even save in formats that MS Office can read! They even look like each other.

I'm a big fan of any *ix os myself whether it's any flavor of Linux, Unix or MAC OSX. They all make laughing stock of Windows, though Win 7 is a hell of an improvement over older versions.

After lots of research and comparing, I went with Lary's recommendation of bitdefender pro.

Thanks for all the replies and info from everybody here!

As for cleaning your registry, there are several registry cleaning programs (freeware) out in the net. Might help with getting the rest of Norton from your pc.

rampage, Win7 is far superior towards slow Vista. Had Vista on my company notebook, didn´t like it at all. I tried Ubuntu once but couldn´t get my mouse to work. I have Win7 Prof. on my netbook (Atom, 1gb RAM), runs fast and smooth. As fast as XP I had on it before.

Can you list and link some????
All I've been able to find recently is the trial ones that tell you that you have registry issues and if you'd like to purchase the full version you can then remove it.

Sure

One I installed just today is this one:
http://www.chip.de/downloads/c1_down...415021&v=3600&
It´s called RegCleaner. Click "Download-Server CHIP Online" and the file pops up. The program itself is in English. 94% of users like this file so I think it might work for you as well.

Another software that might do the job is Wise Registry Cleaner:
http://www.chip.de/downloads/c1_down...415838&v=3600&
88% of all users like this one. Both files are small, 600 kb für the first one and 2.2 mb for Wise.

I hope this helps

Kris

I jsut did this on my laptop and one thing I noticed is that open office will not save in the new .docx format. Do they have a fix for this yet?
