Alaska Highway

How many people have driven it? I will be hitting the road on the 28th of April. What are you tips for the trip?

I hve driven it a few times and I would recomend that you stop at Liard Hot Springs ( it's around mile 495 just before the Yukon border). And if you are going to Fairbanks I would go via Dawson City and the top of the world Hiway and come back via Beaver Creek. The Dease lake hiway ( south of Watson Lake was terrible rough but the scenery is great). The Alaska Hiway is a paved two lane for the most part and usually has a lot of construction and repairs going on. Do not forget to go to Skagway and take the Whitepass railroad train.
Jim O

Re:Alaska Highway

I drove it in August 1988 from Dallas Texas to Anchorage Alaska, had a job to show up for. Took 9 1/2 days of hard driving, with no time to stop and see the sights. Drove back in June 1989, same time constraint. The scenery is the best in the world. Allow plenty of time to be able to stop at some places and sight-see/fish. Take some warm clothes, as above Dawson Creek (mile 0) it can still get brisk at night this time of the year. Definitely get "The Milepost", it is worth its weight. When we went up, and when we came back, there were portions of the road under construction, and in some places you could see the old road heading off into the trees. I think there are always portions under some construction work. I strongly suggest you put some strapping tape strips "x-ed" accross your headlamp covers; also remember that much of that road requires running with headlights on. Have a great trip - everyone owes it to themselves to do it at least once.
