1995 KX 125 starting/running issues

I cant seem to figure out whats going on with this KX, my friend was riding it and it died almost as if the plug had fouled. We changed the plug and no luck, cleaned the carb a bunch of times, changed the fuel that was in the tank, reset float height, checked the reed valves, checked for spark, checked compression and checked to make sure the exhaust was free flowing and not blocked up. Still nothing, neither kicking it over or pulling it to bump start it will work, the most we were able to get out of it is a few back fires. If its back firing that means that the A/F is being lit but somethings still not right. The only thing that I can come up with at this point and time is a timing issue, either the keyway on the crankshafted started to shear and knocked the timing off or something. I have been working on motors of all shapes and sizes for as long as I can remember and I'm even trained in motorcycle repair so feel free to get technical, any and all suggestions are welcome. Sorry for the long post, TIA.

Have you pulled the timing cover to make sure that there is not water in there or that the screws holding the stator have not backed out. Have seen both through people for a loop...
