TXDTR#8 (North Texas DTR) April Meet

I guess our next meet will be on April 21 @ HPP Racing for the dyno.

The Ranch will be open for camping and wrenching, but NO oil burning. :)

BigBlue 03-16-2007 07:16 PM

Sweet. Maybe I'll do over 460 this time. [laugh]

TexasCTD 03-19-2007 02:44 AM

Tyler you just gotta!! I will be cheering you on for sure![director]

Here is a link to the ODRA website and probably more info/directions etc. as the time approaches closer. http://outlawdra.com/html/eventsn.html

Duallydog 03-19-2007 12:56 PM

You'll probably jump all the way to 461 this time. [laugh]

BigBlue 03-19-2007 01:07 PM

With my luck I will. [laugh]

RowJ 03-19-2007 01:09 PM

Can't pass up 3 pulls for $40.00. Will be interesting to see how #'s compare to Bill Davies hanger ramp monster. :)
No changes planned for me between now and then...except for new flashlight holder and painted tail pipe,
which is already done.
(Without a tip on the 5" pipe, it sure does blacken my right rear panel.... but found out it comes off easily with windex.)

RJ

BigBlue 03-19-2007 01:10 PM

Rowland I forgot to mention it to you last time I saw ya but you need a tip on that pipe. A 5" tip would be better looking than nothing.

AggieJustin 03-19-2007 01:11 PM

Hmmm...I don't foresee any changes by April, but who knows. Maybe I'll go to a dyno and not run for once. [laugh]

TexasCTD 03-19-2007 01:15 PM

I am not really expecting any increase at all. The new GDP pump is giving me more fuel pressure (18-19psi) so who knows if it will make a difference or not. At WOT it pulls down to 17.5. The stocker pulled down to almost 0ish.

I'd be happy to just duplicate my numbers on a 2nd dynojet.

BigBlue 03-19-2007 01:17 PM

I'm gonna run this dyno with real meth in the tank (80/20) and see how that helps. If my numbers don't change then I'll be 100% sure that my pump is going out cause there's no reason I shouldn't be above what I'm at. And if it is going out then oh well. It's only got 127k on it with 100k of those tapped so I'm not complaining.

Duallydog 03-19-2007 01:34 PM

Of course it would be the same weekend that I'll be working something at our college rodeo. (If things don't go well I might be able to sneak out) The only thing I could dyno my truck for would be to see if the dump open and closed at full power makes any difference. (Unless I suddenly made enough money for a fuel system)

Diesel-Dan 03-19-2007 02:20 PM

April! man....you guys are just knocking them out! Ya know today is my one year up here already????? Time flies when your haveing fun i guess.....

[laugh] Or we could dig a pit about 5' deep by 5' across and if anyone starts to throw too much wood on the fire, we push them in .... a human sacrifice to the Roman god of horsepower (Torqius Maximus):D

Never Mind!

Maybe just no oil burning.

Well guys I dropped the head off at RayMacs today... Was fairly discouraging talking to him, he has yet to see a 2nd gen block come through the doors without any cracks... He had about 7 heads sitting on the ground with cracks on the valve seats and some progressing up into the head. Hopefully mine will pass!!

The plan so far is to have the Head Mag tested (where they place a magnetic charge on the head and then sprinkle colored iron flakes over the head.. Where the flakes align into a pole is where there is a crack... He demonstrated the process to me with a cracked block, was pretty slick!!)

Have the head decked (within .0005")
Cut for oring
replace valve seals (they have their's customs made out of viton? sp?)
Replace springs with Pro/Sportsman
And probably do a valve job... More details on cut etc.. to follow...

Please no cracks, please no cracks... [redface]

There is a fix for the valve seat cracks, however of course mo $$... If the valve seat cracks have already cruised into the head than no bueno... Some of the heads he showed me were not that noticeable until he mag-ed it then I could run a feeler gauge across it and feel the crack... Seems to only be a problm with 2nd gens, apparantly not a big issue with 1st and 3rd... All according to this guy....[dummy]

Brian, Lock-N-Stitch (made famous in our world by the infamous 53 blocks) can fix anything - for strength and pressure sealing. Valve seat cracks are a fairly common repair for them, and are so simple you could easily do them yourself... I have a few samples sitting in the shop. [coffee]

Im going to try and make this one, wont know for sure until its a little closer.

XLR8R 03-20-2007 12:04 AM

[laugh] I was thinking the same thing Rob - TIG weld it with the high-freq and polish it out, or drill and tap the Lock-N-Stitches and polish it out... better than new either way, but I'm thinking I want to step up to the next level.

I've decided to let the '98 roll on 37"s (Evan is tickled pink! [roll] )... I'm going 19.5" sooner than later! :D

XLR8R 03-20-2007 12:05 AM

P.S. Discount Tire is going to warrantee it, so for now I'm happy to take the path of least resistance. [coffee]

BigBlue 03-20-2007 12:07 AM

Sweet deal mike.

For $50 (coincidentally the cost of a bottle of single barrel), I won't show them this picture [laugh]

Excellent! Always nice to hear about good customer service! Are present wheels forged?

Congrats to Evan also. How long before he is driving himself to the meets?

Can't put a 5" tip on a 5" pipe! I kind of like the stealth 'blacked out' look, but may consider a 6" tip. Any opinions?

Brian...good luck with your head. Thinking...no cracks no cracks!
What was your overall impression of the people & the Raymac shop? Sounds like they know their stuff. Surprised their name has never come up?

RJ

crobtex 03-20-2007 08:37 AM

I like the black..............

Duallydog 03-20-2007 08:45 AM

I say 6" tip

I don't think they're forged; weight rating posted in a few hours.

Evan is supposed to drive the '98 to the August GTG - we've got a LOT of work to do by then! [duhhh]

The black tip looks better, and 6" would probably look great.

RowJ 03-20-2007 10:04 AM

Thanks guys for the Yea's & Nay's. Keep em coming, please!

I got Micah (ODRA) to start a list for the HPP Dyno day. Gave him the five NTXDTR names I was sure would be dynoing. Anyone else want on the list...let me know. Sure to be hugh crowd at that price so we probably want to run early-ish and back to back... which Micah kindly agreed to.

Was very impressed with the guys over at RayMac... I dealt with the owner who was very straight up about everything, from costs to explaining to me exactly what was going to be done.. I talked to the machinist and also the guy who will be doing my valve job. All were very knowledgeable and very helpful explaining the processes. Hopefully it will turn out good [duhhh].

Apparantly they advertise in Diesel Power Mag, but other than that are just word of mouth. They had another 24V head to do at the same time as mine and said they do probably 4-5 per month.

bnold 03-20-2007 10:15 AM

Just an idea.... The paint on my vavle cover is starting to flake.. No better time then now to go sand blast it and repaint... Question is... What color? Keep it stock (Black with no paint on raised letters). D something different: Use the color of my twins boots in there somewhere?? That light blue?...

Shoot some ideas out there!!

BigBlue 03-20-2007 11:40 AM

Whatever you do don't use white. It'll turn yellow even with a clear coat and it's a nightmare to keep clean. Not to mention it's just not cool enough. Oh yeah, and don't sand blast it. Go to wal mart and get some stuff called aircraft remover (it's got an airplane on the front) and use it. You spray it on, wait 10 mins, and hose the paint off. It litterally bubbles the paint off right in front of your eyes. Really neat stuff.

Rowland, do a tip. I just don't like an unfinished look. Also, I hope you put my name in for the dyno.

Anodize it blue....and just buff the letter silver and then clear coat it....if you like blue….if not they got black, red and other color….not much to do…..OR you got power coating.

Rowland, I like the black really! BUT I do like 6” Tips….

JMO...Don't care for the whole matching colors thingie..... Air horns, valve covers, air pipes to & from intercooler. Some even do the alternator brackets and turbo compressor housings. :(
I do like valve covers taken down to bare metal and polished.... with or without black raised letters. Just me.:)

Note: Tyler ...... Is Brian's 'Vavle' cover the same as my solidsteel.com 'Braclet' :D
