My tire guy saved me 4 Michelin 265/70/17E tires he took in. Just picked them up. ($30.00 total and $10.00 to mount them) They have 6-8,000 miles tread left on them... perfect for racing. He's still on the lookout for 4 17" factory wheels for a fellow 'Team XLR8R' member that wants them. My steel 17's only cost me $100.00 with used rubber!!

I've finally discovered all the fast autos run 265's for best times, well kept secret for some reason??.... keeps the rpm/torque up.
The 285/70/17 BFG A/T's I tried last time are bigger than desired....and at 60% tread, are a shame to use just for racing. ($275.00 if anyone needs some).

After I make 3-4 runs, anyone that wants to try these 265's can. Brian gets first dibs (since he never got to try the 285's last time)...if he can make it to the track.

Two reasons. Not at that serious a level yet...... and because I won't find 4 slicks, mounted, for $40.00!

I really don't know many guys that run them... except for Ray Salter.... and his CTD is 2WD.
With a 4x4 launch, slicks could not hurt.... just don't seem to be critical!

Would really love to stay with 315's and change axle gear ratios to about 3.85. That would eliminate any tire slipping off the line with the 265's and get me back to about a 3.54 at the ground.... instead of the 3.14 I live with now!

yay ardmore!! far as I know ill be there!! have a lead on a set of stock dodge 16" rims for a $100... tires no good for me,but deal? pick em up??

as far as the tire size for me goes... anybody have any idea o f ideal tires size for a stick?? definitely want to do a 3rd gear launch.... if small enough could pull a 3-5-6, but without the gear ratios in my tent 6th gear may not have th speed for a tire that size??? 285?? 265??

I have some old 265x75x16's up here at The Ranch. They're not great, but they might work for the track. The price is right........free.

I'll look at them tomorrow and see if they are worth trying. They've been sitting out of awhile.....a few months to over a year.

He wouldn't happen to know where to pick up 6 235/75 (or 80) R17s would he? I'm seeing the end of the life of these tires not being far off. (especially now that I have fuel, and I haven't even been trying to spin them...well, a full try anyways)

Thanks for reminding me guys!

I've spent an insane amount of time on the www over the last week hunting for the ideal tires for my (hopefully ) soon-to-be purchased 19.5" alloys, the stock '05 alloys, my current 17" Predator alloys, and the 16" alloys for the '98.

AFAIK, there is no such thing as a racing slick that will hold the weight of a "street" truck (i.e. 8-10K# curb weight) as far as load capacity listed goes... and I wouldn't want to stress test them in the quarter!
I couldn't find a slick that even came close

However, I did find (and plan to buy) what I think is the ideal tire for our "needs" - Toyo Proxes S/T in 285/60/R17:

42# 30.5"OD 11.5"W 13.7" loadedR 2601#rating @ 44psi

To me, they weigh half what the BFG 315s did, are practically the same width, at a MUCH smaller diameter... this means we can launch in 3rd "no problem" on the stock LUK, eliminating at least one gear change in the quarter (for sure the one most likely to be missed when powershifting). As the specs listed, a 13.7" LR - down from 17 & change for the BFG - that's quite a drop.
It'd be just like rowing the Muncie down the strip - 3 easy no-lift gear changes!

Besides - the price seems very reasonable!

I would not go over 265's with your 3.54 rear end! Maybe 245's would more easily allow skipping a gear and/or launching in 3rd .... assuming 4x4 launch?
I like the idea of E rated tires. Higher speed rating and stronger at lower tire pressures (maybe 45 psi) ....an advantage for drag racing!

You asking about used.... racing/playing tires? Or full time replacements?
My tire guy keps a rack of about 200 turned in used, that he cleans out about once a month. He now has to pay to have them hauled off so loves to sell them instead.
If that's what you want...I can look over his rack. You probably can do same looking around your area at different tire shops. Once you start looking for used tires, you'll notice they are everywhere.

FYI - Ardmore Track gates open at 6 pm. Fun/test & tune racing starts at 7 pm.... runs till 11 pm.

They have a Bracket Race scheduled for Saturday, so should be some serious race cars there to watch, as well!

5:30 pm meet at IHOP in Ardmore for diner, if anyone interested?

I'm talking about a set that has 100% life left in them. I'm about to have a heck of a set of slicks on my truck here in a few thousand miles. I might could use to find a set of 4 dually steel rims though, so I could have some burnout tires (or maybe just 2 and have 6" of traction)

Here is the 22" version of what Mike is talking about....



Its a good looking tire to say the least....But we had to go to a higher speed tire with more of a load rating to get over the 125 MPH tech class......should be in the 140-150 range now with the new tires.....
