Over the last year or so i've noticed a strange sound coming from the front end of my 2006 when its sitting there idling. It may do it while i'm going down the road too but obviously i cant hear it then. The sound is hard to describe but i'll try. It doesnt sound like its in the engine at all. its just a thud, thumping sound around the turbo area of the engine bay. Sometimes i never notice it, and sometimes i hear it every 30 seconds or so. Does anyone know what this might be?

 

Sounds like the bearing on the a/c compressor. I went through this about 3 months ago. Try turning your a/c on the see if the noise stops.

I'm assuming the compressor isnt covered under the extended drive train warranty or is it? Can the bearing be replaced by itsself? Where is the cheapest place for parts?

 

My 07 - 5.9 does this also. But I happened to be behind the truck the other day and I heard it out the tailpipe, loud! What the heck could this be!!!!

 

Do you know where your cat is? Maybe he got trapped in there looking for a warm sleeping spot.

Or if you're near a border, you could have an illegal immigrant stowaway in there. The engine heats up and they start thumping on the hood to get out. Best thing to do is fog the area with ether, that will slow him down or maybe knock him out. This is a good chance to brush up on your Spanish swear words! They come out of there pretty mean and wild sometimes! So spray a good dose of ether through the grill and wait a few minutes, then pop the hood latch while you are in the truck with the doors locked. If he doesn't jump out, carefully open the hood with a baseball bat in your hand just in case. If he's out cold, have a friend help you pull him out. Watch your starter wires, they always have one foot down under the starter wire and it will break if you pull him too hard. You can take his shoes off from underneath, just like changing the oil filter.

Now that you have him out, what do you do with him? If nobody saw you pull him out, I'd just leave him on the side of the road. If there were onlookers you should call Border Patrol and turn him over. Or you could put him in the bed of the truck and tell onlookers that he is your mechanic, and he was in there looking for a squeaking noise while you accelerated. Tell them you'll just take him back to his shop now, then dump him off first chance you get.

 

Are you sure it's not your AC compressor kicking in and out?

If you leave the hood up, watch the compressor clutch and you may find the noise is timed with the compressor engaging/disengaging.

 

Easier to just replace the whole compressor. Any parts store can ger you a reman.. 150-200
