So, after I bought my truck, my mom bought me one of those "anything you could ever need" roadside kits. Well in this kit came jumper cables that I was scared to use on the lawn mower.
Well instead of paying 188 dollars at Napa for 20foot 2 gauge jumper cables, i paid 10 dollars for 30 feet of 2 gauge welding cable and 20 dollars for 2 gauge clamps and some work, and i have some NICE jumper cables.

Mucho better, but I do like the little ones for lawnmowers and atvs, they have tight spots with little square terminals. I've always found it near impossibe to jump a 4 wheeler off with huge cables. They make a perfect duo!!!

 

yours look much better than mine. this old man doesnt want to carry them very far though. that welding cable gets heavy

 

i got 30 feet of it and its about 20lbs. But its soooo flexible

 

LOL, Nice, I did the same thing, except #0, 50' of it ( 25' cables) and I found some really old 1000 Amp capable ends at a parts store, they had been there long enough for the package to turn yellow.

They are not much fun to drag out, but when they are hooked up, you know you are getting a full shot of juice!

Over the course of time, you may find you want to wrap the whole length, I started out like yours, and what I found was when you are dragging it to the car, as flexible as those cables are, they tend to snag everything.

 

i was gonna wrap the whole thing, but i lost flexibility, i think i may loom the entire thing.

 

It is simply amazing how useless those little cables are, except for the 4 wheeler and lawnmower like mentioned. I tried to jump a guy once ( left my cables in the car! ) and we had to use 2 pairs of those little cables to get him going. It was sad. He was scared the whole time! I said " Listen, just let me hook them up, and it will be fine!" He was amazed when it actually worked!

I used to use jumper cables all the time till I got one of these. This one is 3200 amp and will even start a semi. Jumper cables are now gathering dust.
A little pricey but it seems to be one of my most used tools.

I do prefer the rather small cables for jumping vehicles- even the big ones. I just let the engine on the donor vehicle run and pre-charge the flat battery for about 10 minutes.
This keeps both batteries happier, and it will allow for a second start of the vehicle with the empty battery at the first intersection ( you know, just having got a jump start, stalling the engine and having a bazillion folks honking at you as the light turns green)

I use a jump pack for the boat (easier to pass to a boater in need than cables) but for on the street I have my own set of welding cables....err I mean jumper cables. My dad taught me at a early age that store bought cables were no good. I love to help folks out that say "shouldn't I let it run" while my truck isn't even running...I just say "nope, hit the key" and it starts like it was brand new. Can't beat 'em, nice looking set to the original poster.

 

My Grandad used to be a commercial electrician, and he took wires that you used on telephone poles and made his own jumper cables, probably 2 gauge or bigger. They are heavy, but I haven't blinked when putting them on a 4wheeler, or a f450.

 

I did pretty much the same thing and would tell people I jumped with them, that if I can't jump start your vehicle with these, I could always use them to tow them where they were going. Left them on the sidewalk one day after jumping a car and now someone else is loving those cables.

 

Yeah seriously. I've never towed a car with them, but I moved one from my driveway to down my street because my dad had my truck with my towing straps.

 

I have a set of commercial 2 ga cables . . heavy steel clamps & all . . .
they start semis great

 

I have a set of large guage cables that are long enough to reach from the front of my truck to the battery of a vehicle behind or in front of the truck.

It beats having to put them nose-to-nose on the side of the road, or push one out of a parking space to give someone a jump.

Yes that are heavy.
