Hi egts while towing

Well i just bought a new toy hauler, and towing it home the other day unloaded i was seeing anywhere from 1200 to 1300 plus going up grades. Even if i down shifted to fifth they would still climb, so i would have to let up on the throttle. Im running smarty beta 4.2 that bob sent me for a good low end torque towing tune. My turbo has seen a max of about 35, maybe 40 pounds max. I was thinking of buying a snow stage 2 kit. My trailer unloaded is around 7000# and loaded with a full max of 10400#'s. Money is a little tight right now. Shouldnt i be able to get more boost out of this turbo reliably? Its an sps 62/71/14. I know this isnt to hot, but I have heard of to many horror stories about the 03 and 04's dropping valve seats from hi temps. Thanks for any help.

1300 isnt to bad they say you can run 1250 all day and seee no problems. i havent had any problems running that warm. the reason my 03 dropped a seat was due to the injectors going bad and dummping to much fuel and sending the temps into the 1400's and above

I don't think you have to much to worry about. I have a mile long good size grade to climb every time I come home and I'll see about 1200 - 1250* under load when towing my 5'er @10k. I'll just back out of the go pedal a little if it gets over 1250*.

First, beta 4.2 is a race tune! Not a tow tune and the wild torque management that tune has will fuel really heavy down low, that is maybe not all that helpful. Try getting beta 4.4 to tow with or perhaps use regular revo.
The snow system, or really, just shop a little, any GOOD water system will do a good job of reducing egts for you.

Also with that year truck I recommend no higher than 1300 for any length of time and maybe 1350 for short bursts. For your turbo 40-42psi is about the top end of useful boost.
Water will be your friend!

Whats weird about that tune, is i emailed bob and told him i wanted a good tow tune, told him how heavy I would be towing, and he sent me that tune. I have the 4.4 and it fuels really weird on my truck. No power at all, then all of a sudden it kicks in. Absolutely no low end, had trouble getting the load moving. No problems with the 4.2. So you think i'll be ok running 1300 for any length of time? Some pretty long grades here in new mexico. My truck didnt like the revo at all. tnt was ok but no low end power either, at least compared to the 4.2. If i am seeing around 1300 doesnt that mean that cylinders 5 and 6 are running a little hotter? My pyro probe is right in front of cylinder 3 or 4 on the manifold.

I towed with a 62-71-13 with my stix and could keep temps manageable with tnt on 1. I would just get her spooled before the hill and try to keep it at 2200 rpm and it stayed in the safe zone with 16k on 8% grades in WV. The turbo is big enough, your problem is the tune. The revo or tnt might not keep up on flat ground but will be better on the hills.

Good post on towing forum on EGTs below. I down shift to keep my pre-turbo EGTs around 1100-1150. With my 5 speed and 13.5K 5er in 100 degree temps, I usually cruise up the grapvine in SOCAL (long 6% grade) in 3rd at 35-40MPH, EGTs around 1000 and I think RPM around 2300. In 4th RPMs drop below 2000 EGTs go over 1200 and I start lugging the engine.

BTW I use the Smarty standard 5 setting with my SO...seems best setting to keep EGTs down.

I wouldnt tow with 4.2. Also I dont see anything in your sig about trans/clutch work (manual or auto?). But in either case stock trans, 4.2 and a heavy load you are putting a strain on her.

Its a manual trans, with a south bend con ofe. I think im gonna try the 4.3 or the 4.4 again. Its hard to take off the 4.2 because it runs so good.

What levels are you running the 4.2 on? Maybe a lower level on the 4.2?

I've got almost the same setup on my truck, when towing i run my TST (05 twins prg ) on 3/2 and smarty revo on SW2,( no changes ) VA 3.1 off.

Pulling 10k across 70 thru Co. and Ut. i can keep egts 1250 or less and pull grades at speed limit, I have to keep rpms 2k or over or it will start to get hot.

These settings dynoed at 420rwhp 750tq

If bad spelling or grammatical errors offend you you should stay clear of diesel forums!
