Cool When the lights go out, no drivee drivee.

I thought I had this problem tracked down but apparently not. Here's the situation:
  • 96' 2500 2wd
  • Head light main beams seem to work fine.
  • When I switch on the high beams they work for a few seconds and then go out for a few seconds and then come on again. If I leave the highs switched on the black out periods become longer.
  • If I switch back to main beams they do not come on immediately. Not so great...
  • I removed the switch and one of the wire leads was sizzled so I soldered on a new one and the problem seemed to be fixed for awhile.
Driving home last night the problem started up again. Is there a relay or something that I shoudl replace? What am I missing here. I have a trip next week and will need my High beams through some open counrty.

its a common problem. The load on the headlight switch is to much for it to handle and causes it to get to hot and burn up. There are relays for it and also a new switch that fixes the problem, not sure what relays though

Thanks for the info. I'll try the new switch and see where that gets me.
