tps symptoms on stock 95 auto

Driving back from Nashville today, with a light load, about 17000 gross, truck would float in and out of overdrive and lockup.. by the time i made it back to Missouri truck wouldnt shift out of 3rd.. 400 miles at 52mph is a long trip.. i am assuming this is the time to replace the tps with a potentiometer...I found the thread on the replacement, my question is on the location of the tps on my 95.. other than my not being able to figure out the location, it looks like a fairly simple process, thanks in advance.. wendell

It's the only thing that has wires running to it on the forward half of the injection pump.
Figure #1 here shows location and some of the recall involves adjustment http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/970/repair.htm

Sounds like you must have burned out the engine speed sensor at the lower engine pulley.
Does anything else electrical work?
When the ESS goes out the computer thinks the engine isn't running and shuts everything electronic down.

Overdrive can also be locked out by a bad temp sender on the trans lines down near the pan.
If you replace the TPS, try setting the voltage like the FSM says.
What did you need to solder? the TPS plugs into the wiring loom on the side of the pump.

was soldering the wires on the pot, for the wire around on the tps... everything else electric seems to work except the alt and the tach.. checked all fuses, none appear to be blown in either fuse box, will replace the ess in the morning and see if that gets me back to the original problem of not shifting, wondered about the trans temp sender, it hasnt worked correctly in a while, may go ahead and replace it with one for a gauge instead of the idiot light, if that isnt going to cause me more problems?? thanks for the help guys, i really need to get this bck on the road, being down a truck is really cutting into the paycheck....

What you have to do if you replace the tranny temp sender with a gauge is short together the wires that used to go to the stock sender with a 1000 ohm resistor (25¢ Radio Shack). Stock sender is no longer used.
This tricks the PCM into thinking the tranny temp is in the normal range.
