converter will hold up ok, IF your existing trans isnt full of garbage from the old converter. You invested lot of money for a new triple disc to throw it away.....once ya contaminate em there is no way of cleaning them out. I'd atleast buy a gasket and friction/steel kit and tear it down and clean it all up (good time to throw in the shift kit too need to change out the pump rings to get the good l/u anyhow)
prolly cost a couple hundred extra but save ya $1000 converter. take apart the WHOLE trans cooling system and flush it out really good as well. seen a few brand new transmissions go south because the cooling system was not cleaned out properly.
I put a inline filter on mine after i rebuilt it just mounted it up on the frame rail and run the rear cooling line thru it.then a 10psi led warning lite in dash for filter renewal .using a 51495 wix.use em on my tractors and they do keep em clean. gives me a couple extra quarts capacity for cooling also i never see over 165* even in traffic normal temp is 120-130

What exactly failed in the Converter? TCC lockup went in mine, I did a filter change/flush and cut the TCC engage wire and drove it for a while, but I did not have far ( 5 mi) to go to work. I put another stock converter in when I had the $$, but only because I bought a 5 speed twin.

If I had decided to keep an Auto truck, I would have begged, borrowed or stolen to get a fully built tranny.

Original poster. Could you let us know what happened to your converter? Did you actually drop your pan and see a bunch of junk in their?

original poster has an 03......so it could be a 47re or 48re.

....also depending on your needs often you don't have to get a "fully built" trans. I use my truck to tow and used a factory overhaul kit (borg warner clutches/steels). That along with Dave Goerends valve body kit, torque converter, and stronger kickdown band apply strut and lever and it's been 40K of driving a problem free 47re.

JohnBer posted pretty good info....although I don't agree with the inline filter. That's just something else to slow the fluid down in the cooling circuit.

On my way home I stood in it and passed some slow car . Since then the converter won't disengage when I come to a stop in drive. I have the 48re. Pretty positive. Also I do not tow anything but a few 4 wheelers. Other than that I just drive around and have fun

You should be getting a P-Code if your TC is toast.. Might be another underlying problem

if the converter won't "dis-engage" when you come to a stop, it should kill the engine.

it wont. in fact i could drive it and it would be fine. but the sometimes when i go to stop in drive it wont disengage then other times it has no issue? if i stop and its engaged then ill throw it in neutral. then when i have to move again when i put it back in gear it lunges then when i give it fuel it pops loudly. I ordered and ats triple lock. it should be here tomorrow. then in a few weeks im going to go back in and put a new valve body prob ats. When i go to install the converter should i power flush everything?

I have never seen a TCC not disengage on its own, perhaps your TCC solenoid is sticking?

J-Body, doesn't it seem strange what he is describing?

Maybe a valve body issue?

The dealership is trying to take advantage of you .
Take it to a reputable transmission shop, they will usually diagnose the trans for free.

Mine was staying locked occasionally and it was a spring that had broken in the valve body. Dave sent it to me at no charge. Like 20 min fix total.
