steering problem
steering problem
Truck in question is a '93 W250. Today on way to work, when making a left hand turn from a stop I heard/felt a "pop" then when it straightened out it wanted to wander side to side. I pulled over, checked it out and found nothing obvious other than a really sloppy steering box coupler. I rebuilt this a year ago with very minimal improvement. I proceeded to drive to work with no further mishap.
When I got home today I jacked up the frontend and checked out everything; wh. bearings, tierod ends, drag link, steering box mount, ball joints etc. Again the only thing is the coupling. The ps pump and input end of the steering box do have leaks. What do you guys think? Can a worn out coupler have that much of an effect?
Thanks, Chris
Re:steering problem
Don't want to be a grinch, but on my '89, I would get a loud "pop". It was a crack in the frame at the front of the steering box.
Your truck won't have that trouble.
Re:steering problem
Chris,

With the wheels on the ground and the engine running have someone turn the wheels side to side and watch the steering box. If it moves more than just a little flex the mounting plate is probably cracked. I've gone through two. I would also look at the front springs/U-bolts on the drivers side. I had these loosen up before and the force of the steering would push the leaf spring around making a loud pop.

Also watch the pitman shaft on the steering box. The needle bearings could be shot.

Jay
