Say it Ain't So!!! Injector Pump

My 1999 24v Cummins 3500 4x4 - Stock (no alterations) starting sputtering right as I was pulling into my driveway after a short haul. It was running when I shut it down. It had no fuel pedal reponse the last 150 yards of travel. Check engine light came on. I was hoping that the fuel filter that only had 2,000 miles on it was clogged up. So, I proceeded with changing fuel filter. I bled lines 1-5 to the valve cover and got fuel to every one of them. I didn't mess with 6...I figured if it won't crank on five cylinders it won't crank on 6. Anyway, it still won't crank. I had a buddy come over and check the codes and they are as follows:

PO216 - Injection timing control circuit malfunction;injection pump timing failure
PO251 - IP fuel metering control A malfunction(cam/rotor/injector); IP mechanical failure fuel valve feedback circuit
PO252 - IP metering control A; range or performance problem(cam/rotor/injector);fuel valve signal missing
PO1688 - Not in my book
PO1689 - Not in my book

Drove like a text book IP failure. Since I don't know anything about these computers I am hoping these codes lead me to something that is less expensive to fix than replacing the injector pump. Wishful thinking...I know. Please advise.

Thanks!

Wow! that's nearly every nail needed to nail that coffin shut. VP time.......and throw an EZ edge on there while you're at it. You won't be sorry!

I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I've built a few gas burners. Never had to do much to my diesels...that's why I love 'em! Is this something I can do with standard tools and knowledge or, should I leave this to the pros?

Thanks!

It will take you a couple of hours to change, no real big deal. Make sure you spend a couple extra dollars (40) and get the upgraded rear IP mount for the engine. You may find that the present mount is either broken or has the bolt missing. Some of the mechanics say that they think this mount is one of the big problems with the pump.

The mount comes from Cummins with bolts and all necessary parts. The old one is a thin flat peice with a round piece welded to it that the bolt goes through. The new one is all cast parts and really socks the end of the pump on the engine.

The dealer I work at stocks that bracket. Much better piece. You can do the pump install. Only somewhat of a special tool you'll need is a steering wheel puller. Offset open 3/4 helps too, but is not necessary. Torque of the front pump nut is 125ft lbs fyi. After you remove the nut turn the engine over by hand until the keyway on the pump shaft is pointing up. And don't get too "western" on tightening the injector lines. Many here have been walked through pump installs. Give it a try.

Man, talk about luck having it quite on you in your own driveway!

At least you saved the cost of a tow.

I hope I'm that lucky when mine goes (Knock Wood!)

Yea...no doubt. Add a tow to the cost of fixing the pump and I'd be sunk! Is it true that Bosch will not warantee the rebuilt pump if I don't replace the lift pump, too? The way I see it, the lift pump is either good or bad. Mine is good....why replace it?!

I have an inline gauge the shows 13 psi. BUT to make sure my gauge wasn't bad, I took the filter off and hit the key. Fuel shot everywhere...just like I expected. Let me know if you think I should be more precise. I am going to buy a new IP today. If we aren't sure it's the IP let me know!!!! I don't know what else it could be unless I have somehow stripped a gear.

Thanks!

If it "shot fuel everywhere", it's working, i replaced a VP not to long ago, just be patient and give yourself a good work area they aren't that bad (hardest part is getting it started back up ) . Might not be a bad idea to throw a permanent fuel pressure gauge on the pillar though...good luck

Going over everything one more time before diving into buying an injector pump, I checked my overflow valve and discovered that I can blow air through it with the pressure from my lungs. If it's the overflow valve that has caused me this problem...would my computer still throw all of the codes listed above???

Thanks!
