Rear Drum E-brake seizes

Hey all, well on the way home tonight, my truck was acting like it had a ton of weight being pulled behind it. Well I slow on the t-pike, and I hear a tire lock up. Well I pull into the service plaza, all tires and brakes cool except the right rear. I get it off, pull drum which is smoking hot, and the e-brake adjuster, plate and spring are all ripped up and lying in the bottom of the drum.. So I remove the pieces, put drum on and drive home, no problems. My question is why/how does this happen. I put the shoes on at 101,000, and they have 168,000 now. The shoes are at 50% wear. What gives here? I think the drum is salvageable, well see. Any ideas why this would happen? I put the shoes on when they were replaced and have been great eversince until tonight. Possible all the salt up here? Any help would be appreciated. And any clear diagrams of the assembly , the chiltons are rough. Thanks Stephen

I had a rear brake lock up on a Ford I had years and years ago.

Salt had gotten into the E-brake cable and rusted everything together.

Worth checking.

Could the spring retainer for the hold-down spring maybe not have been seated good? That's the first thing that occurs out at me. Sometimes those little cups don't get seated good. Another possibility is the cup or the retainer pin rusted through and let the other parts fall loose.
As far as fixing it, the left side is exactly like the right, I mean exactly. And you'll want to look at that side anyway since 1. you want to make sure there are no excessively rusted parts there, and 2. when you buy new hardware for the right, you're likely to get hardware for both sides since that's how it is sold most of the time.
