rear brakes broke

A friend of mine is helping his uncle out on his 04 dually. Seems that his uncle lost his rear brakes. At 60K pulling a four horse trailer (with no brake controller), his rears are grinding metal to metal in a big way.

Where I need the help is that the buddy has the rear end torn down and he can not figure out how to get the discs off. Do the axles have to be removed to get the rotors off. We did a search and older models look to be able to knock the rotors off by banging on em with a big hammer. This does not seem to be the case with the 04.

Any input would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance,

Gary

If you want to through your rotors away after you get them off , then you could use a hammer , I think that a hammer takes more skill to use correctly than most tools , and not do harm .
Haven't taken rotors off that yr yet , so I can not tell you what to do , but I think its easy to tell you what not to do.

broke back brakes

Well, my bud, after much consternation and 6 Buds, determined that they bolted to the hub on the axle. A vise and a large cheater pipe persuaded them off. I am going by there later and am going to get a visual on the entire thing. John, thanks for your input, as far as the old rotors are concerned, they are gonna make great trot-line weights....
