Pusher Pump Issues
Pusher Pump Issues
I have bought two Holley Blue Label pumps in the last six months b/c they keep going out. I am running them wide open with no regulator and when I first put them on, I am running around 22 psi fuel pressure. The last two weeks, my gauge read about 8-12. I thought that it might have been b/c I needed to change my fuel filter b/c it has done this before, then after a fuel filter change, it has solved it. This morning my gauge read ZERO!!!!. At first I thought it was my isolator b/c it is an older style that they had trouble with, but mine has always worked fine. Then I "bumped" the starter to listen to the pump run and noticed it didn't sound like it was picking up fuel. I was thinking about going to the Holley Black Label pump and running a regulator, that way I won't be running the guts out of the Blue Label. I don't want to go to a Carter if I don't have to, I really don't have the money right now. (Just had major head and turbo troubles). I've got a couple buddies that work at AutoZone that might let me use the Blue pump as credit towards the Black pump but I don't want to go that route if I still have to change it in another couple months. Just wondering if anyone knew anything about the Holley pumps or what the problem might be. Anything would be nice!! thanks, RD
I have never seen the pumps like Holley last more than a few months to a year. The best bet is a really heavy duty pump like the FASS or the FUEL PREPORATOR
AIR DOG.
The pumps like the Holley are not intended to run full time, the ones made for a real diesel applications are.

Where do you have your fuel pump mounted? With 22 psi of pressure are you running the blue in series with another pump? I have been running a Holley blue for ~3 months as the sole lift pump. It is mounted at the tank. I see 11 psi at idle and have not had any issues to date. I may be in for problems, but it looks good so far.
Today I installed a carter p4600 as a pusher, it's rated at 7psi and 100gph. now my fuel pressure gauge is 30psi at idle, and 27psi at WOT. My lift pump only put out 5psi before( I took it in for warrantee replacement but they used the flow test and it flowed 46 oz of fuel in 25seconds) so they charged me and said sorry your lift pump is up to spec. I added the pusher to extend the life of the liftpump and vp44 as my warrantee is good for another 18,500 mi. I thought maybe my gauge was off, but I hooked up a test gauge to the vp44 schrader valve and it read the same as my FP gauge. Has anyone else experianced this?????

sorry it took so long to check back everyone. I have ordered the carter pump that flows 100 gph at 15 p.s.i., and plan to run a regulator. I called jeg's and got the phone number to Carter and asked them about the pump running diesel through it and said there should be no problem, apparently the Holley pumps aren't built as strong as the Carters. I ordered it throught Jeg's and its being shipped to my door for $99.98. Should be here tomorrow is what the guy at Jeg's said. I've got a buddy that works at AutoZone and he couldn't beat that price with the Holley. Wish I'd bought this Carter pump first. 110 bucks a pop for the Holley's ain't cheap, especially since i've already burnt up two. I could've almost had a F.A.S.S. system by now!!
Oh, yeah, I do have the pump inline with the factory lift pump mounted as close to the tank as I possibly could. And to you IronButt, YOU NEED A REGULATOR!!!! I've always been told to go no higher than 25-26 p.s.i. at idle, and that's pushing it.
thanks again everybody, I'll let you all know how the carter does when I get it installed!!
