Poor performance

New to site--great info!
Problem, we made a run to Yellowstone this past week. On the way towing a 5000 lb. travel trailer, I noticed as I added accelerator pedal, I got no response from the engine. This would happen intermittently. Sometimes I just kept my foot in it and after several seconds it would recover. If I downshift it would also recover. This stumble never occured with the cruise control on, up or down grades (which makes me think it is not lift or injector pump related). It was also not noticeble without a load--no trailer.
6 speed HO, 56 K miles, no mods...any suggestions on diagnosis??

I am not very knowledgeable about this stuff but was wondering if you have had the truck very long? Reason I ask is that I have had similar driving experience and finally figured out that it was normal (for my truck while towing) under certain rpm’s combined with slight headwind or slight incline. Its like the turbo (or something) takes a few seconds to start ramping up the power unless I downshift. Have you noticed any major change in mpg?

Bought it new in 02. Have towed 'stuff' several times a year, this is a new problem for me. The MPG on this last trip of 1558 miles averaged 13.2...thats about what I averaged 2 years ago going cross country with the same trailer in tow. I'm at a loss...

when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? do you have a fuel pressure gauge? you need at least 6psi going to your vp44 injection pump.
do you have boost and pyro gauges? what were the readings on them?

Full service prior to trip last week (air, oil, fuel filters, etc...)
I have no add-on gauges.

I will check the codes tonight and try the apps reset...is it possible to have a pump failing and still have normal operation w/the cruise engaged?

I was so caught up about my CTD stalling when I put it in gear I failed to acknowledge the slugish power as you described above. This has been going on for me 1 to 2 weeks. Had codes checked for the third time since problem started and got 0216. Injector pump should arrive Thursday and put an end to all my problems(and my wallet) What I found insane was all these shops with expensive scanners found nothing. Went to auto zone and used their scanner to get code.
Best of luck

problem found/problem solved...or soon will be...

Thanks for all your help--yes the IP is gone. The second code was just the dodge side telling the cummins side something was wrong. IP and LP pump replacement scheduled (warranty up in October...just under the wire...).
Thanks again for the info and the education.
