Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Real easy to check to see if water got into it. After sitting over night, crack the drain plug. If oil comes out you have no coolant in it. The coolant will settle to the bottom. If you had that much diesel in it, it should look and smell like heavy diesel oil instead of motor oil.

Re:Oil all over dip stick????
If it was mine, I would change the oil as soon as possible. See what comes out. If anything looks suspicous, I would definatly have the oil sampled. I think you can get a sampling kit from Geno's. Correct me if im wrong somebody.
Good luck, and keep us posted. :) |

Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Here's 2 things to consider:
1. My truck is on order and I don't have the manual yet....so I have to answer your question with a question. How much oil does the manual say is required for an oil change? Is it 10 quarts or 11 quarts? If the manual calls for 10 quarts and from your previous post, you put in 11 quarts that would cause a "high" reading. When I change my car oil, the manual calls for 5 quarts.....that's 4 quarts in the pan and 1 quart in the filter (for a safe startup). 2. When you pull the dipstick out of the engine, oil will drain off the dipstick and onto the dipstick tube as you pull it out. When you reinsert the dipstick, it will catch that oil on it's way down and back up again causing oil to show up on various places on the dipstick. Good luck. |
Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Ok, I changed my oil today. I measured the amount that came out of the pan and as much as i could get from the filter. I was somewhere between 2 and 2.25 gals. I expect thats reasonable, after 4K miles. So it turns out that I was a little low on oil.
The oil that came out looked normal to me-and no coolant came out 1st after craking the drain. It didnt smell like diesel and wasnt too dirty. After changing it and putting 2.5 gals in it, i checked the level on the dipstick numerous times and there still wasnt a distinct mark. i started it and ran it for a few minutes and then checked it when it was running. The dipstick looks the same as it did when it wasnt running. Then after killing the engine, i checked it again. Same resutls. Im stumped. FYI--The oil on the dipstick varies in amount on the dipstick--there is a solid amount on the bottom of the dipstick, then kinda thins out, then thickens and thins as it travels up the dipstick. It is even present on the twists and up near the rivets on the stick. Im hoping that it is what handymantim said it might be, the oil draining off in the tube and then showing up on it as its pulled out. I made one mistake--not checking it when there was no oil in the engine to see if anything showed up, or not showing up. Thanks for all the useful info. Hunter |
Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Hunter...next oil change you could try a lighter viscosity....5W40 for example.

Glad everything is ok.

Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Most of my diesel tractor dipsticks have a small hole drilled in them at full and add. Makes it very easy to read.
Perhaps drilling a couple of holes could help you also. |
Re:Oil all over dip stick????
2 weeks ago I changed the oil in my 2001 for the first time. ( i just bought it, used) I noticed that after I filled up the engine with oil, that it was all over the dipstick. After wiping it off, and sticking it back in several times, I was mad. It was all over the dipstick! I finally began to see the oil thicken up at the bottom, and could see that it was were it should be.
although there was a light film of oil all over the dipstick, I could distinctly tell that the oil level was correct. it was thicker on the bottom of the stick. I have only changed the oil once, and it still has plenty of oil in it. Hope this gives you some security. I think you are ok. Unless you are losing allot of oil. |
Re:Oil all over dip stick????
I would make yourself a ramrod from an old coat hanger or something and carefully run a small rag through the dip stick pipe and clean out any old slug that may be coating the dip stick tube. Careful not to let the rag fall in. [eyecrazy]

Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Not a bad idea. Think I'll try that. Thanks.

Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Hunter maybe a better idea, use a bore brush, probably 38 cal, screwed to a bendable shaft. Did that once on a gummed up old v8.

Re:Oil all over dip stick????
Not sure on a 24 v but on a 12 the dipstick tube can be removed with just one bolt at the top. The bottom is just pushed into place with an o-ring seal. Then you could then clean it easily with solvent, brake cleaner, etc.
