Not shifting
2000 Dodge Turbo Diesel 4x4, Automatic. Truck wont shift out of first gear until the engine revs up and you let it go back down, same with the second, then no problem. Am new to this site but I have been up all night reading postings. I'm hoping someone has an idea. My other half says to just drive it until it stops, I want to get it fixed before something major goes wrong. I just don't want to take it to a dealership without an idea of what I need to ask them OR tell them. I want to get it fixed, not be taken for a ride. THANKS!!
Have you checked the fluid yet, is there any warentee you mentioned dealer so did you get it lately , if there is not an option for them to help cover some or all , anyway from checking posts here if you have a trans problum thats the best time to get an upgraded trans which every body hear says is one of the first upgrades to get becouse if you are ever going to add power mods you will lose the trans , so dont do it twice , look here for ATS or DDT for some of the top sources.
We bought the truck new in 2000. Fluids are fine. We were told it could be the bands and I've been reading the posts here to learn more about that. Were would I find out what transmission I have?

make sure the kickdown cable is free and returning. if its stuck in the wide open position all the shift points will be delayed and held back untill you get going fast enough. does it want to downshift hard on its own as you slow down?
Sounds like your governor pressure sensor in the tranny is going out. Mine went out at 80k and only cost me about $70.00. It would feel like it was trying to take off in third gear and when I came to a stop, it would feel a little spongy before coming to a complete stop. Simple fix if thats your problem.
We have 160,000 miles on it. I helped the other 1/2 adjust the bands and it shifts much better but it still doesn't shift right until you push on the gas a little harder. This was the first time they have ever been done.
Where is this governor pressure sensor located? I think I am learning too much about this truck. Someone had told the other 1/2 about a shift sensor and no one knew what I was talking about when I went to the Parts department. Maybe that is what the governor pressure sensor is? To access the governor pressure sensor you need to remove the oil pan from the tranny and you will see it on the passenger side middle. It is black plastic about 1"x 2.5" with a wiring harness plugged into it. If I remember right it has a couple torx head bolts to help secure it. After bolts are removed it should pull right out, it has an o-ring in the nipple to complete the seal. Fairly simple to replace and install.
Besure to check your oil and pan magnet for any foriegn debris that could indicate any other possible problems.
