Lift Pump

Lift pump is wasted. Bunch of clicking when ever the truck warms up, when cold no clicking, does not ahve to get to operating temp though, i thought that was wierd, but it clicks bad. So i ordered a new lift pump and figured while i was in there i woudl get a new over flow valve and filter. Anyways, I have two questions; 1. does anyone ahve astep by step on repacing the lift pump because ia hev not done one before. 2. Will it hurt my truck to drive it on a bad lift pump sice it has been clicking i have drove roughly 45 miles, but before i will get the new lift pump, i ahve to drive to school and work on monday which is a total of about another 55 miles or so round trip. would i be fine to drive it, or should i not drive it until pump is replaced.

Make sure you change or at least clean the prefilter:

Also, its a good time to replace your rubber fuel lines

Be careful removing the old pump, sometimes on worn out ones the actuator arm that goes into the block will fall off during removal and drop into the engine if you're not aware of it. Turns into a major headache.

After you unbolt it drop it straight down and keep your eye on the part that goes into the engine.

Do you think it will hurt the pump if i were to drive it to school tomorrow, which is about 55 miles round trip, or should find an alternate ride, because i was thinking about going over to cummins and see if they will fix it, since i still am under warrenty

Cummins waived warranty to Dodge as part of the engine supplier deal.

Only way to have anything done under warranty at Cummins is to have a referral from Dodge.

Warranty on the 1997 (I believe) was 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

I know it's not a good thing on a 24 valve, no idea what damage you can incur on a 12 valve.

I think I would check fuel pressure before buying a lift pump - they rarely fail on a 12V especially at that milage.

Definitely do a pressure test before replacing the lift pump. Check the fuel lines for kinks too. The pump has 3 one way check valves that will occasionally fail and could cause the ticking. When one lets go the engine stops running in about 2 seconds. The tick is the only warning. (mine lasted about 200 miles before letting go 70 miles from home) Good luck.
