Here's the codes
I used the OBD last night and found two codes...Code 1: P1688...Code 2: P1688. Can I conclusively say it is the VP44? I'd hate to spend $1300 and be WRONG! From the reader it gave me "manufacturer controlled computer and auxiliary outputs" which doesn't personally compute for me. According to the chain autostore it means "metering oil pump stepping motor circuit malfunction". From the above I'd say that the only metering oil pump on the '99 CTD would be the VP44? I need a little advice.
Is the truck running? What is the problem?
Do you have an in cab fuel pressure gauge? If not more than likley your VP is toast. Without knowing the fuel pressure your lift pump many have died and with no extra cooling fuel from the excess fuel passing through the VP44 it may have burned up. They do fail just because also.
The 1688 means that there is an electroinc failure within the VP44 ECU which is mounted on top of the pump. Unfortunately, this module is a repair by replacement type of part and is not independently servicable from the VP44 itself so it is probable that the VP44 will have to be replaced.

I'm sorry, I posted this in a new thread...yesterday I posted the following:
Well, here we go...I was leaving from delivering flowers to my wife at work (I should get extra special consideration for this) and the old dog laid down on me...no warning just like the fuel was shut off. I've got 120k and have changed the LP just 4 months ago. At 10:30PM on a Saturday I'm thinking maybe the LP just shot the wad - AGAIN. Needless to say after a bath in fuel on the city street I know the LP is working fine to the injection pump (I'm not smart enough to put in a fuel pressure gauge ) and I don't have a **** thing coming from the injection lines when I cracked them. Yup...it's full of fuel, my shiny engine compartment reminds me that the LP is kicking butt, and I'm real scared everyone will be telling me it is time for the YP44. Is there any codes I can get from turning the key on and off 4-times or will I have to deal with the local cash-extracting dealer to get a computer to read the codes? I have a service manual for a '94 which describes a fuel shut off solenoid and relay that have been known to fail. However, I cannot locate a solenoid on this '99 and I'm unable to identify the relay so I'm assuming it's not going to be that simple. Can you guys give me a little help?
So after getting the codes, all I got was the P1688.

P1688 - "Internal Fuel Injection Pump Controller Failure"
I'm no expert, but it sounds like the VP$$ electronics may be ka-poot.
Stay tuned and I'm sure someone with the same expierence will chime in.

1688 is the true "death code". The 0216 code is an injector pump timing circuit failure, but it is only a parameter code, can cause dead pedal, occasional WOT ( don't ask ), mild surging and shuddering, or nothing at all. The 0216 can also be caused by external circumstance such as low inlet fuel pressure, and a faulty engine coolant temp sensor. It will affect driveability, but not necessarily shut the truck down.
1688 does indeed mean that the internal control board on the pump is fried, toasted, cooked, expired like a gallon of milk or a library card. It is the code of instant demise.
How is that for putting a positive spin on a negative situation. Sorry about your luck, been there, done that, about to do it again. Such is the loving and caring nature of the VP44 pumps.
Look around for pricing, you will be amazed what you find.

Pind; Thank you for the information. Now I know what I gotta do...a new VP44 and YES AN IN CAB FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE. Since I have several irons in the fire, I think I'll just take it to Area Diesel Service and have it installed. They quoted me at about $1300 installed.
