help! truck died can't start

well yesterday leaving my shop, I got onto the street and drove it down the block when the truck just shut off. I have not been able to restart it since. I did have low fuel when i gunned it a bit, I thought maybe I ran out of gas. I have bumped the starter and hear the pump running and fills the canister easy. I did put about 10 gallons of fuel in , but just cranks over. could I have air in the lines? Please help! don't want to take it to the dealer!

The truck is a 2004 dodge 3500 drw with a quad box set on #3, muffler delete, and an afe drop in filter, and a boost elbow for a liitle more boost.

crack the #1 injector, then bump the starter to see if you get fuel to your injectors, if you get air bubbles and then fuel, you have air in your lines. I can usually bleed injector 1 and 3 and then get the truck running after a filter change. If you don't get fuel by cracking an injector then it looks like VP44 problems.

Good luck

well I ended up having to take it to the dealer. I really wanted to avoid that. They told me it might be the injector pump, which I hope it isn't unless it is under warranty.the truck does have around 74000 miles on it.

well the dealer told me it WAS the injector pump. I was told this on monday, now I have to wait for chrysler to realease the parts so the dealer can fix my truck. they are replacing it with a remanufactured on that has a 12000 mile warranty. I will probably be without my truck for a whole week.

On another note, I saw somewhere on the net that ultra low sulpur diesel was bad for the pumps, anyone heard of this? This was from cummins saying the bosch pump was not compatible.

thank for the help .

I noticed a sticker on a diesel pump, can't quote it directly but it claimed using ultra low sulper diesel in a 2007 model year engine will damage the engine and is illegal. Saw this on an auto pump at a Flying J station.

Ultra Low Sulfur is made for 2007 and up Diesels.

Low Sulfur is what we've been using for years, and that will damage a 2007 and up Diesel, specifically the emission control devices.

The stickers are a bit confusing, since they don't differentiate between Ultra Low and Low.

.....anybody else have the funny feeling that there is going to be a follow up post on how the "injector pump" didn't fix the prob?

FYI the common rail engine does not have an "injector" pump, but rather a dual stage "high pressure" pump. "Cracking" an injector line will not help you start a common rail (actually can be on the dangerous side), but rather cause a no start. All the lines and fuel log are at the same psi. The injectors are what perform the injection event and they are electronically controlled by the ECM. Good luck and I hope they are right!

Well I am not familiar with diesels, I wish I was now. One mechanic told me it might be an injector leaking and causing the pressure to drop within the whole system causing a no start. Believe me, I really wanted to trouble shoot myself and then let the dealer fix it, just in case they were just going to start throwing parts at it until they fixed it. Thats just more downtime and this is a work truck. Maybe i'll get a hemi! jk

WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Just got my truck back from the dealer. They replaced thr IP and fixed the problem under warranty. The truck was at the dealer for about 2 weeks, I am glad to get it back. They said probably low fuel had something to do with it. They recommended not run the fuel no less than 1/4 tank b/c the fuel also cools the pump. I guess having low fuel heats up since it runs thru the tank and motor quicker so thats how it heats up.

Either way, thanx for your replies

I build aftermarket performance parts for this dealer, so most of the service advisors knew who I was. They told me the delay was the dealer diagnosed the truck and sent the info to STAR and they would return what the problem was. After this happened, chrysler had to release the pump for warranty work, and the pump ended up being backordered. The pump was in wed. and got my truck thursday, yesterday.

I guess chrysler is picky when it comes to diesels b/c the cost of the fuel components(inj, IP, etc)
Believe me, even though I new the people there, I was nervous about them voiding my warranty for something dumb like muffler delete, AFE, plus them knowing I am in the racing business including twin turbo diesels, vipers, chevies, fords. You never know.
