Go over the entire egine bay with a fine tooth comb looking for grounds not connected. I had a similar experience with my Suburban a few years ago. Dash wouldn't work properly, starter would not turn and all it turned out to be was a very small ground on the front of engine. Hooked it and engine fired within first turn.

You're welcome. I am still amazed that the little ground wire I left off made so much difference on my Suburban. It wasn't no bigger than an 18 or 16 gauge, but wouldn't even let the gear position indicator work right.

If that 18 ga wire is all that your starter has for the ground, it is scary.
All engines I worked on have a braided copper strap for engine ground.

It wasn't the main ground for the engine coming from the battery, but a small ground that attaches to front of engine near timing cover. It must be a ground for computer or some of the relays. I do know before finding and putting it where it belonged, when you turned ignition switch to the "start" position the dash would go dead including the gear shift position indicator. This was on a '97 . All of this was controlled by the computer. After engine started, only thing left was to set timing.
