This is on an '01 H.O. vin 7, manual truck with 98,000 miles. Drove the truck today and did just fine nothing seemed wrong. Decided to check fuel pressure and volume since I am getting real close to the 100k mark and end of warranty. Hooked the guage up got in and truck would not restart. Lift pump wasn't coming on and check engine light came on. Checked codes--p0230 and p1689. Reprogrammed ecm from super chips back to stock so if I needed to take to dealership, but now the codes will not reset but truck is still dead. Did a search and could be possible VP. What do you guys think? If it is just the LP and VP, then great still in warranty but if not I will try and fix my self. Any help would be appreciated.

 

p0230 is lift pump circuit out of range which in your case sounds like it is open and not working at all. You've now proven to yourself that "yes" the VP44 is capable of supplying itself fuel to keep running without a lift pump as long as the fuel intake system is free on any air leaks. Installing your gauge (pushing on the schrader valve) introduced enough air to create all the pocket you needed for a no start. Is it hard on the injection pump? yes. Is your 01 still under warranty? That is dependant on the in service date and most 01's are done as they were an early build in that era.

 

That makes since then because i knew that the vp could pull fuel through the pump if need be but not for a long period of time before damaging the vp itself. With the intruduction of air the disrution started and the vp cannot reprime the fuel system. With the other code set No communication with the vp, then I guess it is safe to say the vp is now trashed. Guess dodge will be getting a tow in tomorrow
