Help getting steering stabliser off, please.

Ok, I did a dumb move by hammering on the stud to try and get the stablizer off the track bar and all I did was smash the stud some. Which mean I can get the nut back on to even drive the dang thing.

So what do I need to get it off, a pitman arm puller?

Thanks.

I'm conused Are you talking about the track bar or the steering stabilizer?

The steering stabilizer should be pretty straight forward. If you mashed that bolt just run to your fastner supply store and get one.

The track bar should have a captive nut on the back so you shouldn't have been able to mash that bolt.

I always end up using a pitman arm puller on the side with the tapered bolt, some are still hard to get off, need to pound on the puller bolt.
Heat will help also.

Another trick that works well for tapered bolts, though I'm not sure there's enough room on the stabilizer, is to hit both sides of the part the bolt goes though at the same time, hammer in each hand.

Smokindog,

I'm trying to get the stablizer bolt off the track bar.

Bill thanks for the info. I've tried using the pitman arm puller and I can't get it to hold because I can't get it lined up straight. I have to do it on an angle and it's just not working.

Any other thoughts? This tapered bolt is a PITA!!

Get a really BFH and beat the snot out of it. If that doesn't work, a torch will take care of it.

Probably too late since you've smashed up the threads but what I do is thread the nut on half way before using the puller. This makes it harder for the puller to slip off.

If it's just the steering stabilizer then why not try driving it without the nut on it? It may just pop out then! Just don't get on the highway!!

After I destroyed mine...I went to the old toolbox and pulled out a balljoint fork and after a couple whacks it popped loose.

I'll second HdPower's comments. Took mine off yesterday the very same way.
