never looked at a 2x4, but either way, there should be some shims between the tailhousing and the race---if the tranny was still working good, don't lose those shims 'cause they're select fit to set up bearing preload inside the tranny. Should be the same deal for the countershaft on the bottom. Again, this is if the setup for bearing preload on a 2wd is similar to 4wd. The race isn't 'really' a press fit. I wouldn't be too alarmed that it fell out of the case. If you can get the tailshaft fixed, I'd say put the shims and race back how you found them and run it....these things are expensive to build, don't ask me how I know:< Kind of a weird setup and hard to explain...hope I didn't confuse things more. Maybe some more coffee.

A race is a place where a bearing is fit. A bearing race is usually a recessed in the pice for the bearing to fit in.
