Engine is missing?
Re:Engine is missing?
If your injectors are bad and you want to improve your performance and fuel economy, I'd go with the RV275's or a stage 1 injector. The 275's are just under 300$ I believe and with what I have read, should be money well spent. If you do plan on bombing your truck in the future, don't waist time and money, get the more agressive injectors now. The jobs seems easy enough to do at home and I don't know of any special tools that can't be substituted ny the average tool box in you garage. The installation instructions are easy to get online or out of a Hanes/Chiltons manual. If you have any trouble getting the instructions just ask and I'll email you what I have. You asked about the rate at which cylinders heat up. The number 1 cylinder will heat up more than the others and possibly quicker due to a restriction in the block casting. The other cylinders should be within 10 to 20 degrees of each other IMHO. Make sure you don't have a cracked or otherwise damaged exhaust manifold. The injection pump timing should keep things metered fairly evenly and the computer is responsible for that in the newer trucks. Unlike a timing pin or mecahnical timing in the 1st Generation trucks. A compression check of your cold cylinders will help you diagnose bad injectors or pistons. Hope I have helped. P.S. any computer codes being set. Don't remember if you mentioned any or not.
Re:Engine is missing?
I would pull the injectors and take them somewhere to have them pop tested (probably a local tractor shop will have a pop tester) It shouldnt cost more than a few bucks per injector. Also may want to check your timing.
Just a few suggestions to throw into the pile

Good luck

Re:Engine is missing?
I pulled out the one bad injector, it was bad
. The tip was all carboned up. I have been running on 5 cylinders for the last 6 mouths :
. Anyway I called Cummins, they want $100 for one injector. I called Pete's diesel in Salt Lake. He can get it for about $60.
I stopped at the local Dodge Dealer this morning. They did not have the injector I need. I asked about a full new set. They want $150 each. While I was there, I test drove the new 94 CTD four door full bed, WOW what a sweet truck :-* ;D. I only wish I had an extra $41,000. :'(. The wife said NO :'(.

You think the 94 was sweet - you should drive the '04!!

For around $200, you could get a set of Bosch 275 injectors. They'd be brand new and they'd give ya a little more power at the same time.

Re:Engine is missing?
Bearfoot2, I think sometimes I am brain dead, I can read and reread and still mess it up
, Yes the 2004 is very sweet. I should have you signed up do do all my proof reading ;D
BigBlue, Do they make the Bosch 275's for the 12 valve engin.? Where do I get them? I have been leaning towards a full new set.

Re:Engine is missing?
I'm not sure if they do, but give Rod a call at www.wildcatdiesel.com and he'll set ya straight.
Re:Engine is missing?
If youre going to spend the money on new injectors go ahead and get the 370s ;D. That was the first mod on my truck and I loved them
. Call Rod at Wildcat he'll get ya set up. I think they run about $300 a set. And they are well woth the money 8).

Re:Engine is missing?
Scott and the rest of you,
The 370's scary me to death, I guess I am gun shy about bombing my truck, I have already blown up one engine. :'(. I have a 92 truck, with the old automatic tranny and old everything else. I have this fear of bombing the truck and then needed to get a new tranny, transfer case, etc.
I am not sure the auto tranny in the old 92's are very good? It has served me well up to now, it has 120,000 miles, I fear it is on borrowed time.
Don't get me wrong, I love power as much as the next guy, but the funds are in short supply and as I said I am gun shy.
Do you think the 370's would rip up my tranny?

Re:Engine is missing?
Next step is to do a compression check on #6 cyl. It takes a special compression guage to check a diesel. Barring that, I would swap injectiors from #5 to #6. If the injector is bad, #5 will now become cold.
Best case is to take it to Cummins dealer and have them compression check #6. That will tell you if you have a problem with the #6 engine cylinder or the injection system.
If the compression is good, it would have to be a problem with the injection system. If the compression was low or non-existent, then you have a bad valve (not sealing) or piston or ring problem.

Re:Engine is missing?
I finally got around to having the compression tested on my sick truck. They found the pressure to be OK. It has been determined that the injector pump is having problems. I had them take it out and send it to a pump repair place.
I am wondering what I should have done while the injector pump is already out. Should I have 3k gov. springs installed, and what will that do for me? Should I have the timing increased to 15 or 16 deg, what will that do for me? what are the pros and cons of these things? I am also thinking about having them move the fuel plate forward, that should give me more power, right?
I was under the impression that the timing was set on the engine with the injector pump on it. The repair place told me the timing was done on the injector pump, in the shop with the pump on the test bench. Anyone know details on this, it must be done both places.
Thanks,
Howard

Re:Engine is missing?
Trannies are decent with reular maintainence, Fluid and filter change. I tow with mine on a regular basis (in O/D) and have over 350,000km on it which is about 215,000 miles. No work yet (knocking on forehead) except regular oil and filter changes. These old trannies were based on the 727 Loadflite and are pretty darn reliable. O/D is external. JMHO Rick
