Question ECM died?

I was on my way to work, and left a traffic light and the engine just quit! Dead, no go! check engine light on! won't start!
Towed to dealer, they said it was the ECM. I guess that stands for Electronic Control module?
Anyway, they told me it was $1,700.00 + and I told them to order it. That was 5 days ago! They say they got it today, and started onit right away, but it won't be ready for a couple more days. Now they say they are "programming" it.
Is this normal?
What do they have to program?

No that doesn't seem right. You can R&R ECM in about 1 hour. Programing should only take a few minutes. Just my thoughts. Thanks Steve B.

That price is more along the lines of the VP44.
Figuring you can get a Catcher ECM for under $700, a stocker shouldn't be more than that.
(well, used to be able to get the Catcher)

Catcher sure looks like a deal now, considering the price dealer is charging.

Ecm

Now the dealer tells me the new ECM could not be programmed. Then told me the Fuel Injection Pump (FIP) went bad and wiped out the ECM. I have a feeling they are charging me R&R twice on the ECM.

They can do a "MOPAR" and get a new ECM and put on a new FIP. $4,700.00!

As most know I hate the constant dealer bashing that goes on here.....but I'm not liking what I hear on this. IF the ecm were dead you would still be able to plug in the Cummins tool directly to the VP and IF the VP was still good the truck will start and run. I would diag a truck to death before I stepped up to say the ECM was bad. I've put on more 12 valve lift pumps than ECMs on a 24 valve, they hardly ever go bad. There is a recovery procedure that could be attempted if they happened to botch the controller update (which is a pita on the cummins ecm). While the odds are astronomical of a failure of this proportion occuring, I guess it could happen......but I doubt it.

Bad Ecm

Thanks for all the support guys, I really appreciate it. But the sad news is, I have less chance of being satisfied than a snowman has of surviving a July heatwave in the Sahara! This 1999 only has 118,031 miles on it. I even had Autometer gauges (EGT & LPFP) put in to protect myself.

After checking with three other dealers, this seems to be the going rate around here (over $4,700.00) in Southern California.

An aquaintance who used to work for a Dodge Dealer in Nevada (who now works for a Cummins dealer) said their shop could do it for $3,805.00 tops. But after I pay the "diagnostic fee" of $89.00 and the 185 mile tow bill to tow to the Cummins dealer it looks like a wash.

Dodge has just converted another "buy American" buyer to "buy Japanese". As soon as I collect the truck, I'm off to the nearest Nissan Dealer.

dealers ???= dollars!!

Sorry to hear about your problem. If they were better ( do ask for more info on what part went bad this will help in the future if it should happen again ) then they are, there would be less of us only tooooo willling to go back to the Japanese vehicles. This truck of mine I never have (ENJOYED) because of the low power since new and their inability to fix it and not find anything that they could say was under warranty so I ALWAYS had to PAY.
