diff tire sizes on same axle??
diff tire sizes on same axle??
I am my own roadside assistance company!!!
last night i was coming around a long curve on my way home from work, and I felt my steering start to get loose as if i was loosing traction. I started working the steering wheel right and left, and truck was not handling well at all. So I started to slow down, and I began hearing a sound that sounded like aggressive mud tires on pavement. So I pulled over on a side road, and I opened my door to see my back, driver side tire was totally flat!!!!
So I pulled out of traffics way, and called my old man to come help me. (I was in a getto neighborhood out in the sticks, and I didnt have my pistol with me, so I needed some backup). Luckily I was only 4 miles from the house, and way out in the country. My dad brought the old ranch truck that has an air compressor in the back.
We had the tire changed in no time flat, and I back home in no time.
My question is this:
My spare is a 265, and my other tires are 295's. So will I hurt my back axle with two different diameter tires?
Im sending the wife to get a new tire friday. She only has to drive 10 miles to work today, and 15 miles to get the tire changed friday. Will it be ok?
(I didnt want to drive it 100 miles to work and back, so Im in the civic, it feels like im driving a caufin!)
thanks,
PHillip

Re:diff tire sizes on same axle??
Different diameter tires on any axle with a differential will make the diff work harder. For one short trip as you discribed it will probably be OK but keep the speed down. As a general rule of thumb never run different size tires on the same axle.

Well sorry you had trouble, now if memory serves me right it was just a short while ago you was contemplating getting her,her own truck, now since she has yours you might not get yours back
and are doomed to the civic till you find yourself another truck

I still have my '97. It is for ranch use only right now since I dont have the title for it. ONce I get the title straightened out, I am going to do some mods, and start driving it. Its a reliable truck, and I think it will last awile. I will probly let her drive the new one. this might ward off any hopes she has of wanting to buy a brand new one! I am just trying to find any way to justify keeping my '97. she says, one of them has to go.....the civic or the '97... thats an easy choice for me! duh.

If you've got to drive your truck, switch the odd size tire to the front. Leaving it on the back will cause the clutches in your LSD to slip constantly and burn up. You'll be replacing them in no time.

If you have no LSD you don't have a problem. If you do, you still don't have a problem. The difference in rotation of the two wheels isn't fast enough to burn up the LSD. It will be wearing the whole time, but it does that whenever you go around a turn anyway. In short, don't sweat it.

I've always been told that different tire sizes on a posi rear-end was a big no-no. If you've got some time (I won't do this with my truck) go to a parking lot, crank the wheels hard and put 50 miles on the odometer going around in circles. Then feel the diff. Report back on how hot it is. Inquiring minds want to know.

Re:diff tire sizes on same axle??
I re-read the first post here and noticed that you're only driving 25 miles. The difference in tire rotations per mile is about 34 revs. In 25 miles, you'll slip the clutches about 850 revs. So I'll eat a little crow here and say that you'll probably be OK. Personally, I would swap with a front tire just for piece of mind. Or let enough air out of the taller tire to get the ground to axle height the same on each side. BTW, crow tastes really really bad.

Wife just called from discount tire co. They put on a new tire. Drive out 240 bucks! The previous owner didnt leave me any info as to where he got the tire, so i have no idea if it had a discount warranty.
well i got a road hazzard warranty on it. So now ive got a new tire. and a warranty in case another goes out.
