Every time a lift pump in my 05 or 06 starts going out we always know way ahead of time because you'll still have fuel in the tank and run out IE 1/4 to 1/2 and your stuck. Pulling that tank with even 1/4 in it is a pain. They will roll allot of black smoke when they don’t get enough fuel from the lift pump as well but when they're getting to the point they wont pump at all anymore. I've not changed a in tank lift pump yet that didn't have that small screen covered in crap so the last time I placed some foam (some you know won't react to fuel) over that screen in the bowl. Time will tell if this is why my pumps keep going out on me or if it will help at all.

Not on my 05 or 06. His is a 4.5 so he should have the same in tank pump as an 05. Mine has a small bowl on the end of the lift pump assembly. It has the pump return and fuel gauge all together in one unit. Oh yea don’t let a dealer fool you about the price either I pay 149 for mine some dealers will tell you 300+ some are 200+ just call and tell them well that not what x dealer just told me. Those guys will get off their backsides and sell you one cheaper and still make money off it. A little BS shot at a parts guys can save you lots of money

Are you guys positive that I have an in-tank pump? I dropped the tank to do the vent mod, and I don't remember seeing a pump. In a way it is enlightening to me to hear a knowlegeable member echo that a bad pump DOES cause lots of black smoke. For what it's worth, one of the last fillups took 35.7 gal. on a shortbed truck's 34 gal tank.
As to price, I bought the 7year/100K warranty, so this should be covered, otherwise I would be attempting this myself.

You might or you might not. Just call a dealership with your last 8 of hte vin an ask them wich one you have to make sure. Have you ran out of fuel and the gauge still said you have fuel?

Mark,
Nope...never ran out, but sure have come close on a few occassions, which I now realize is not doing the pumps any good at all. I have had the overhead reading "0" for up to 30 or so miles on a few occassions, and as stated earlier, I have put over 35 gallons in more than once. No more of that.
Well, I am heading in and will hopefully learn what is going on in short order. I'll keep y'all posted, and my thanks to all that have tried to help.
Mike

when the cp3 is starving, it will surge the fuel on and off as it tries to maintain pressure and then over compensates the other way. know what i mean? mine would do this, rattle, smoke, and not want to rev. after a shut off, it would be fine for awhile. i changed the l/p and cleaned the rail relief the same day. never had it come back.
